Idina Menzel, Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Porter and More Participate in “Miscast” 2021 (WATCH)

Have you ever wanted to play a role onstage but know that you traditionally would not get casted? So have your favorite Broadway stars!

For the second year in a row, the Manhattan Class Company – or MCC – Theater hosted their annual Miscast Gala virtually where some of the biggest stars of stage and screen performed musical numbers done by characters that they can only play in a non-traditional setting.

The gala also serves as an annual fundraiser, which provides funds to produce highly talked about Off-Broadway shows, support youth artists and New York City public high school students and literary development work with emerging playwrights.

This year had an all-star cast of 15 performers, including seven Tony Award winners and an additional three Tony Award nominees. However, these stars are not just known for their stage work, they’re also huge stars on film and television.

Raya and the Last Dragon star Kelly Marie Tran opens the show and duets with herself on “You and Me (But Mostly Me)” from The Book of Mormon. From the upcoming In the Heights, Melissa Barrera and Leslie Grace take on “What You Own” from Rent. And Disenchanted star Idina Menzel performs “Morning Glory” from Pippin.

Also from the movie world, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It star Patrick Wilson revisits one of his earliest films, 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera. Instead of playing Raoul, this time he takes on Christine Daaé (played in the film by Emmy Rossum) and beautifully covers “Think of Me.”

From the television world, Peacock’s Girls5eva star Renée Elise Goldsberry performs “Those Magic Changes” from Grease. CBS’ B Positive star Annaleigh Ashford gets in touch with her inner feline with Cats’ “Mister Mistoffelees.” And currently wrapping up the final episodes of FX’s Pose, Billy Porter sings “Diva’s Lament” from Spamalot.

This year also saw the return of Gavin Creel (Hello, Dolly!) and Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge!) who wowed audiences in 2016 with their steamy duet of Rent’s “Take Me or Leave Me.” This year, they take on Jekyll & Hyde’s “In His Eyes.”

MCC also had a TikTok challenge that allowed theater fans to miscast themselves in their favorite roles and they highlighted some of the best videos after the other performances.

If you want to donate to the cause, you can visit MCC’s official website.
