Music Monday: Meet DJ Pebbles

Happy Monday, readers!

Meet our new Music Monday artist this week, DJ Pebbles.

DJ Pebbles is a 19-year-old Australian pop DJ and vocalist that infuses a feisty, fierce, and fiery energy into electronic dance music.

Inspired by the likes of Madonna and Beyoncé as well as Whitney Houston and Nat King Cole, she began singing in grade school. Her family often took boat trips, and every port turned into an opportunity for the budding artist to perform.

“I would sing and dance everywhere we stopped,” she recalls. “I drove my parents crazy with family concerts almost daily!”

Earlier this summer, DJ Pebbles released her new single “To Not Love You.” The dance floor-ready track features a pulsating bass and handclaps that build toward an explosive drop and underscore Pebbles’ fiery vocals. “To Not Love You” is off her forthcoming 2017 EP, which is something she’s been working towards since her childhood in Brisbane. In addition to a DJ career, DJ Pebbles balances a full academic course load at NYU’s prestigious Tisch School for the Arts.

Celeb Secrets caught up with DJ Pebbles recently to talk about all things music! Read the full Q&A to learn more about the budding DJ and listen to “To Not Love You” below.

Celeb Secrets: When did you decide that you wanted to be a pop DJ?

DJ Pebbles: “Being honest, I had somewhat of an epiphany when I was 17. I was at a club and this Australian DJ was playing. I was fascinated by the control the DJ had over the mood of the crowd. He was the key ingredient to everyone’s enjoyment. On top of that he looked like he was having a blast. That night I went home and watched all these YouTube tutorials on how to DJ. From that moment I was obsessed.”

Celeb Secrets: You just released your debut single “To Not Love You” last week. What can you tell our readers about it?

DJ Pebbles: ““To Not Love You” is my first single and I am so excited to finally share it with everyone! I love that the music is bright and upbeat – it’s everything you would want from a dance pop song! – but the lyrics tell a bit of a different story. Everyone can relate to that feeling of loving someone you know isn’t good for you and that terrible feeling of heartbreak when you know you have to move on. I really tried to capture that experience, wrapped up in a pop song! It’s a wonderful feeling to have my debut song out in the world, and I am so honoured and excited to be working with the legendary Randy Jackson!”

Celeb Secrets: Can you tell us about your acting and modelling career?

DJ Pebbles: “I am an entertainer and I love all aspects of the industry. I have been fortunate to model for some amazing Australian designers including Carla Zampatti. In regards to acting I am fortunate to have an amazing manager in LA, and have the opportunity to currently be studying acting at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in the Stella Adler studio in NYC. It really is an experience of a lifetime.”

Celeb Secrets: What can we expect from your new EP coming in 2017?

DJ Pebbles: “I’m working hard on the new music! I’m definitely taking my time and enjoying the process of creating. I’m a DJ so I love putting different sounds together and trying new things. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all takes shape. I want anyone who hears my music to have fun, feel carefree and dance!”

Celeb Secrets: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you yet?

DJ Pebbles: “It has an up-tempo pop dance sound with a unique track and truthful lyrics. My mixes currently are all based on top of a dance beat however I draw inspiration from songs that I have heard throughout my life. So it has a combination of old and new songs and spoken word quotes that humour or inspire me.”

Celeb Secrets: Where is your favorite place that you have gotten to DJ?

DJ Pebbles: “It’s hard to pick a favourite spot because to me the spot is irrelevant. It is all about the audience. The goal as a DJ is to entertain a crowd and if your crowd is engaged and loving your work you’re doing something right and that makes it the best place to DJ!”

Celeb Secrets: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

DJ Pebbles: “WOW, that’s a tough question. In 5 years I would like to imagine I have had a couple songs in the Billboard Top 20, been on tour, and am DJing and performing at festivals. I will have graduated from NYU by then. I also hope to be working on movies with amazing A grade actors so that I can continue to grow as an artist and learn from the best. I also want to work with a lot of charities to help young kids who have a dream like mine.”

Celeb Secrets: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

DJ Pebbles: “The Chainsmokers – I think they are super original and a head of their time. I would love to sit down and pick their brains.  I admire how they combine indie and dance music to add a cool flavour to their music. My favourite part of DJing is production and making original remixes. I think collaborating my quirky sound with The Chainsmokers would result in material never heard before.”

Celeb Secrets: If you could perform at any festival, which one would it be?

DJ Pebbles: “Coachella in America, Tomorrowland in Europe and Splendour in the Grass in Australia.”

Celeb Secrets: Since we are Celeb Secrets, is there a secret about yourself that you can share with us?

DJ Pebbles: “I am super clumsy! I have broken my nose like six times.”
