The mother of Modern Family star Ariel Winter claims her 14-year-old daughter’s relationship with an 18-year-old man is the real reason behind the young actress’ decision to ask a judge to temporarily place her in her sister’s care.
Chris Workman, Winter’s mother, told Celebuzz in an exclusive statement that she “caught them engaging in behavior that I feel my daughter is too young mentally and physically to understand.”
“I put a stop to it immediately,” Workman added, revealing she pressed charges against the unknown male teenager. It is not known what charges were filed, or with what law enforcement agency.
“I filed charges against him because legally he is an adult and if he wants to engage in adult behavior with a minor than he should also be ready to suffer adult consequences for his actions and poor judgment,” Workman told Celebuzz. The mother did not elaborate further about what the alleged “behavior” was between the pair.
“I will not apologize for protecting my daughter, as she means the world to me and I will always be there for her and I will always protect her to the best of my ability until the day I die,” Workman said.
According to court papers filed on October 3, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge last month put Winter, who plays teenager Alex Dunphy on the Emmy-winning TV comedy, under the temporary guardianship of her older sister, Shanelle Gray.
Workman was alleged to have slapped and emotionally abused her daughter, according to the website TMZ.
Winter was removed from her mother’s home and her sister will retain guardianship until a November 20 court hearing.
In her emotional statement, Workman said Winter’s sister came “out of the woodwork” once it was announced the cast were to receive substantial salary increases. The Modern Family cast filed a lawsuit in a bit to better their deals to appear on ABC’s top-rated comedy.
Said Workman: “She has only seen her little sister maybe ten times in the last fourteen years.
“They have no relationship and her motives are not out of love, but out of spite. She had problems as a child and she and I have maybe seen each other a dozen times in the last twenty years.
“I made a conscious decision years ago to distance her from the family because of the lies she told on me so many years ago.
“I never wanted her unstableness to effect Ariel or anyone else in the family.”
The distraught mother of the promising starlet added: “My biggest nightmare is now being played out in the public arena for people to make judgments on me and my daughter and our family. I only hope that as quickly as this blew up, that it will go away just as fast and Ariel will come home and we can move forward with love as a family.”
