Dominique Gets Real About Debut Solo Single “Convince You” – Exclusive

Pop songstress Dominique is the girl next door that’s slowly serenading her way into our hearts with her music.

Having songwriting credits with Justin Jesso, Mali-Koa, Madi Wolf, Savannah Lynne, and Nina Nesbitt, the budding artist was featured on “Talk To My Body” with LDN Noise and most recently “All Day” with James Maslow.

Just yesterday, Dominique gave the world the first taste of her original music with the release of “Convince You.” Co-written by Dominique with Jesso and David Mørup, the track is about convincing a significant other to bridge the gap between just friends, and something more.

Celeb Secrets caught up with Dominique recently to get the scoop on “Convince You,” working with James Maslow, and what’s to come from her upcoming music. With talents rivaling songwriters-turned-singers Julia Michaels and Starrah, 2018 is bound to be Dominique’s year to dominate.

Read the full Q&A + listen to “Convince You” below. Tell us what you think of the song by leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post!

Celeb Secrets: You’re gearing up for the release of your new single “Convince You.” What can you tell us about it, and why did you choose this song to be your next single?

Dominique: ““Convince You” is the song that started it all!! I had been songwriting for other artists for a long time and “Convince You” was the first time I walked away and felt it was really mine!”

Celeb Secrets: What was the writing process like for “Convince You?”

Dominique: “I had a session with Justin Jesso and David Mørup, who are just two incredible talented writers, and it just flew right out of us! It was a really fun session and I’m lucky to be able to write with such incredible musicians.”

Celeb Secrets: A lot of people know you from your feature on James Maslow’s song “All Day.” Are there any pre-release jitters you’re having for “Convince You” since it may be the first time fans are hearing your solo, original music?

Dominique: “Ohhhh yes!! I always get nervous, but it’s the good kind of nervous because it means so much to me.  I’m so grateful to be on “All Day” with James! He is incredible to work with and unbelievably talented – so I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity!”

Celeb Secrets: Can you dish on working with James for “All Day” — what was it like in the studio, etc?

Dominique: “First off, James is an incredible singer.  He’s so precise and has a great natural feel for melody.  I remember the first time we worked together and he was just singing in the studio I had to kinda check myself and step up to the plate because even without trying he was so good! Second, he’s a very kind hearted person.  Now that I know him better, I really call him a friend and feel very fortunate for that.”

Celeb Secrets: Are there any differences from being featured on a track rather than having your own track? Which do you prefer?

Dominique: “I actually love when a song has two artists on it (female/male, female/female, male/male).  Recently I’ve been working with Dalton Diehl, an amazing writer and singer, and we’ve both been singing on the song’s we’ve been writing.  It’s a blast and brings a unique double perspective to the song.  Also, it’s way more fun to have someone up there singing with you! But I am also excited to start my solo music!!!”

Celeb Secrets: We know your a lyrics girl — what’s been your favorite song to write for yourself and for another artist?

Dominique: “I wrote one of my favorite songs ever recently, that will be on my EP.  Lyrically its gonna draw some tears haha…

Hmm, well my best friend Mali-Koa released her single “Honest” and man, that song is just stunning melodically/lyrically/and her voice! Then my other friend Nina Nesbitt released the most bad-ass song called “Loyal To Me” that just gives me life.”

Celeb Secrets: Why do you think our fans should give “Convince You” a listen?

Dominique: “I think fans are going to love it!! It’s a song that really just makes you feel good!! You can sing along to it, dance to it, drive to it, work out to it, etc!! I really feel its a song that you can play now and love it and in 5 years you’re like “man, I love this song” and still know every word.  (Ok..so might be wishful thinking but I hope thats the case)”

Celeb Secrets: Later this year, you are releasing your debut EP. What can you tease from it? Are you taking full creative control for it, or are you working with other writers?

Dominique: “I do have creative control, but I also love talking through my ideas and strategies with my team at Arrival Music and Awal and of course my close friends.  My bestie Gena Milanesi is one of the most talented and creative people I know, and she’s my soundboard for most things.  I think it’s incredibly important to have a group of people around you that you can truly trust and go to for advice.

A little tease would be that the songs will all have their own personality and story.  “Convince You” is the start but it’s not necessarily implementing a singular sound for my music.  I am a songwriter at heart so I write what comes out of my heart without any limitations.  So if the song wants to be acoustic, it will be. If it wants to be a massive dance jam it will be that.  So the EP is going to have difference facets of me.”

Celeb Secrets: What’s one thing you want listeners to take away from listening to your music?

Dominique: “I hope it makes them feel something.  Whether that be a big ole happy smile or a heartbreaking tear!”

Celeb Secrets: Since we are Celeb Secrets, what’s a secret (fun fact) about yourself that you can share with our readers?

Dominique: “My nickname is Sneakers, Sneaks for short haha!  Most people I grew up with call me that!  I’ve played soccer since I was 4, and was always very, very fast.  So one day, 5 years old, running around like a maniac on the soccer field, I was given that nickname and it’s kinda stuck!”
