Earlier this week, British actress Emma Watson surprised everyone with her gender equality speech at the U.N. (United Nations) headquarters in New York City. Emma was appointed earlier this year as a U.N. WomenGoodwill Ambassador and took an interest in stopping gender inequality.
Emma promoted her new campaign HeForShe and called it the “first campaign of its kind.” In this campaign, Emma asks men to join the cause and stand up for gender equality. “I am reaching out to you before we need your help. We want to end gender inequality and to do this, we need everyone involved…we want to try to galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change and we don’t just want to talk about it. We want to try and make sure that it’s tangible.”
Emma explains that gender equality affects men as well and says men put up a front and are scared to be sensitive because they’ll be seen less manly if they do. “Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing sets of ideals.”
Emma has received a lot of support from many familiar faces such as Harry Styles, Logan Lerman,Chris Colfer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt among others.
