This year’s event held so many surprises from Nicki Minaj’s ever so sophisticated wardrobe malfunction to Miley Cyrus giving light to very important topic in lieu of her acceptance speech and of course we can’t forget Blue Ivy coming onstage as Beyoncé accepted the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award.
One of the biggest night’s of the year for the music industry, the VMA’s were brought back from New York this year to be held at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Here are some of our favorite moments from the show!
10. Jay Pharoah “Hosts”
While the VMAs this year were host free, there’s no argue that comedian and SNL star Jay Pharoah brought down the house with his appearances throughout the show as we waited for the next presenter or performer. While Jay made us laugh with his rant on Ariana Grande’s age and impression of Jay -Z, his best moment was his impression of the infamous Kanye West– cracking jokes about what the rapper would say if here were up there.
9. Ariana Grande’s First Big Win
2014 has without a doubt been the year of Ariana Grande. You can’t go anywhere without hearing her name or her songs, so it was no surprise this 21 year old took home the VMA for Best Pop Video for her song “Problem” featuring Iggy Izalea. With it being her first big award, the singer was definitely flustered and unsuspecting of such an award as she stated “I really didn’t think I was gonna win one of these so I didn’t prepare anything so I’m sorry if I forget anyone.” Ariana’s continued humbleness is what makes us love her so much! Congrats Ari!
8. Fifth Harmony Wins Artist To Watch
Our girls, Fifth Harmony took home the VMA last night for Artist To Watch voted by you! An unexpected win, this was definitely one of our favorite moments of the night as the girls jumped up in shock at their name being called. The genuineness of this moment is something we don’t really come across anymore and totally warmed our hearts. “Mom, look what happened!” Joked Dinah Jane Hansen. Congrats girls! We love you!
7. Black Widow
Iggy Izalea and Rita Ora took to the stage in all black to perform their newest hit “Black Widow.” On the red carpet, Izalea stated about the performance to take place later that night, ”It’s a little different for me, so I hope everyone likes it.” The performance painted a stunning picture of the song as ballerinas performed a delicate yet dark pointe routine. The simple silhouettes of the ballerinas allowed this to be a true iconic performance without having too much going on to take away from the routine. Loved it.
6. Sam Smith Performs “Stay With Me”
Utterly talented Sam Smith took to the stage midway through the show to perform his smash hit “Stay With Me.” Kim Kardashian- West presented the singer in a captivating performance with just a piano that brought the audience to tears.
5. Blue Ivy’s Cameo
During Beyoncé’s performance, baby Blue made numerous cameos in awe of seeing her mama up on stage. At the end of the performance, Queen B got choked up as Blue was brought on stage by Jay-Z as they both presented Beyoncé with the 2014 Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. Precious!
4. Bang Bang
Ariana Grande, Jessie J, and Nicki Minaj opened up the show in a performance to remember! Ariana started off with her single “Break Free” before Nicki took the stage with “Anaconda.” Transitioning to Jessie J, the trio then took the stage together with their powerhouse vocals to perform their hit “Bang Bang.”
3. Miley Cyrus Has Homeless Teen Accept Her Award
A complete 360 from her unforgettable performance last year with Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus played it totally cool at this year’s VMAs. The singer won Video of the Year for “Wrecking Ball,” and in a twist made her “date” go up to accept the award for her. Little did we know, her date was a former homeless teen named Jesse. “Thank you all — my name is Jesse, and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving lost and scared for their lives right now. I know because I am one of these people.” Jesse claimed that Los Angeles has the largest population of homeless youth in America and urged people to go to Cyrus’ Facebook page to raise awareness and funds to end youth homelessness. This selfless act truly was by far the most moving moment of the night. Way to go, Miley.
2. Taylor Refuses to Jump
Taylor Swift has always been known for her never absent comedic relief in everything she does. While the VMA’s are known to be one of the biggest events for those in the music industry, Taylor refused to go to all heights. Finding her self atop a massive 1989 sign, the singer appeared to be ready to jump off and into the arms of her crowd of dancers, before the music suddenly stopped. “No… no.. I don’t care if its the VMAs. I am not jumping off of there,” said the singer as she disappeared from view before appearing in front of the 1989 sign where the number presumed.
1. Beyoncé Receives Michael Jackson Vanguard Award
After an amazing performance with a medley of songs from her self titled album to close the night, Queen B was awarded with the 2014 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy. “And the recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and the greatest living entertainer is Beyoncé,” said Jay-Z before handing his wife the trophy as baby Blue Ivy clapped her hands together and shouted into the mic, ”Yay mommy!” “I am so full,” said a tearful Beyoncé in her acceptance speech, “I just thank God for this moment…”
