With stunning gowns, glimpses of A-list stars, and the last hoorah from hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, the 72nd Annual Golden Globes seemed to be the best yet.
The Beverly Hilton Hotel hosted the star studded event in California where attendance included not only actors, but even musicians, such as Lorde, John Legend, and Prince. Also in attendance were Oprah, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez, George Clooney, and many more, including the cast of Boyhood who took home the most wins, overall.
Here are some of CS4U’s favorite parts from the show!
10. Margaret Cho
Introduced by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the “newest HFPA member,” Margaret Cho got into character as North Korean General Cho Young Ja. In her skit, she vouched for a picture with Meryl Streep, presented, and even told the audience she would be hosting the award show next year!
9. Ricky Gervais
You can always count on the hilarious Ricky Gervais to bring in the laughs. Walking on stage to present with a drink in his hand and cheeky smile on his face, Gervais seemed to not be completely in his element, stating “It’s going well isn’t it. Let’s not ruin it by me saying anything really.” However, it seems his comedian complexes were unable to withstand as he effortlessly cracked jokes for a good two minutes before finally presenting the award.
8. 50 shades of Grey stars
At this year’s awards we got the first glimpse of the stars of the upcoming 50 Shades film- Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. The lead co-stars of the highly anticipated film, due out Valentines Day, were there in support of their new film as they both looked stunning walking the red carpet and presenting together later during the show.
7. Surprise Appearances
One of our favorite thing to look for at award shows are the stars in attendance. While we get an idea of who will be at the event by watching out for red carpet appearances, there are many celebrities who choose not to walk the carpet, yet stun us when they walk onstage during the show. Instances such as these included Oprah, Prince, Gwenyth Paltrow, and Jared Leto.
6. Kristin Wiig’s God Father Impression
With Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts, you can’t expect their SNL castmates to not be in attendance. Not only did they show, they presented! One of our favorite comedians, best known for her role in Bridesmaids, brought on the laughs as she presented the award for Best Screenplay with Bill Hader. She explained how important screenplays are to movies and proceeded to throw out some of the most “memorable” lines from the most famous movies, such as Titanic and The Godfather.
5. George Clooney Lifetime Achievement Award
53 year old George Clooney attended last night’s award with his wife Amal. There, he accepted the Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award for his astounding career. Clooney ever graciously accepted the award, with a heartfelt, unexpected speech on the ridiculousness of award shows, finding the love of his life, and praising everyone in the room on having the opportunity to even be there. “For the record, if you are in this room, you’ve caught the brass ring. You get to do what you’ve always dreamed to do and be celebrated for it… It ain’t losing.” Well said George!
4. Gina Rodriguez Speech
While Jane the Virgin is a new small show, it has gotten quite the big acclaim! The 30 year old Chicago native won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a comedy series for her role on the show. In her genuine teary eyed speech, she acknowledged herself as part of a culture who wants to see themselves as heroes. Rodriguez also thanked her parents for telling her to never stop dreaming, leaving us with “my father used to tell me to say every morning ‘Today is going to be a great day. I can and I will.’ Well Dad, today’s going to be a great day. I can and I did.” Cue the tissues!
3. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Monologue
In their third and final position as hosts of the Golden Globes, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made it very clear that nothing and no one is off limits at this year’s show, stating “What are they gonna do, fire us?” The two comedians cracked up the A- list crowd in a ten minute monologue by singling out almost every big star in attendance, and even stars not in attendance (Bill Cosby).
2. Unexpected Moments
While award shows are known for being extremely put together and planned very much in advance, one thing that the viewers live for are unexpected events- those that were not planned! These include winners of the night, as well as those who did not go home with a Golden Globe, stars in attendance and not in attendance, flubs on names and unexpected humor and acceptance speeches that come out of yet field and still blow your mind, while speaking dear to your heart at the same time.
Sometimes our favorite stars don’t show up to an award show, and sometimes our favorite stars, movies, and TV shows don’t win! When it comes to an award show, there is always that chance for disappointment. One thing we know we can count on, however, is expect the latest trends in fashion as our favorite celebs walk the red carpet. This years dressers included Michael Kors, Versace, Chanel, Vera Wang, Zuhair Murad, Gucci, and so many more!
