While everyone was preparing themselves to welcome the New Year the entertainment industry lost a great actor, most known for his role as Uncle Phil in ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘. James Avery died Tuesday evening at a hospital in Glendale, California due to a complication from open-heart surgery.
His most famous role was playing Philip Banks in ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘ the loving uncle to Will Smith’s character which aired from 1990-1996. Amongst many other projects Avery was in demand as a voice actor which his voice roles included Shredder in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series and James Rhodes in Iron Man the animated series.
He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and first appeared onscreen as a dancer in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers“. Avery went on and appeared on multiple TV shows and movies. His last appearance was in the film “Wish I was Here” by Zach Braff which will appear in the Sundance Film Festival.
