I Rode a Snow Bike for the First Time and Here’s What Happened

Every year, I look forward to working X Games Aspen because its just that good. I love the fact that I’m able to ski, work, listen to great music AND see some of the most famous athletes throw down their biggest tricks. Plus, it’s Aspen — you can’t complain about that!

I have been covering X Games for three years now, and each time I go to Aspen I like to try something different. This year, I went COMPLETELY out of my comfort zone and tried riding a snow bike for the first time. As much as I enjoy snow sports, I am the definition of a girly girl, so this was both exciting and scary for me at the same time.

Timbersled offered members of the media (that’s me!) an opportunity to test their snow bikes prior to making their debut at X Games Aspen 2017For those of you who don’t know, snow biking combines the speed and agility of a dirt bike with the terrain capabilities of a snowmobile.

Timbersled has been the undisputed leader of this rising sport since its introduction in 2010 and has continued to revolutionize it since that time. Popularity for the sport grows every year — now thousands of snowmobile and dirt bike enthusiasts are riding all over the world.

This year, X Games Aspen 2017 introduced Snow BikeCross — which brings the excitement of actual Supercross racing to the SnoCross course with a competition of modified dirt bikes, which replaces the front wheel with a front ski and snowmobile track in place of the rear wheel. Like SnoCross, racers battled on a closed-course track lined with rollers, jumps and bermed corners. In the Final, riders completed approximately 20 laps with final finish order determining their ranking.

On January 26, Timbersled and X Games brought us up to the forest for the private riding session. I went snowmobiling in Leadville, CO the week before, so I had an idea of what to expect when it came to preparation and riding. I was still nervous about the fact that it was still part dirt bike and I have never done anything involving a motor bike.

When we arrived, we had to put on all the proper gear, including helmets, goggles, and boots. We then were given an introduction on what a snow bike was and how to use it.

After the introduction, each of us were paired with an instructor to learn hands-on how to ride the Timbersled snow bike. The instructor highlighted what was mentioned in the introduction, however, we were able to try what they talked about for ourselves. It all started to hit me that I was actually going to ride a snow bike and I could not be more excited about it.

After I tried the basic tasks (on/off, breaking, giving the bike more gas, etc), my instructor and I gave the bike a spin on the practice run. When I was riding on the run, it reminded me of the snowmobile riding I did the week before. Since the snow bike only had one ski in the front, it was really crucial that I kept my balance. Thanks to my awesome instructor, I did not tip over once during the session!

If you are really into winter sports, you know that one of the best things to do is carve up the fresh powder that Colorado is spoiled with every day. Before we wrapped the session, my instructor and me took a lap in knee-deep powder, and it was absolutely incredible. The feeling you have when going through the fresh, deep snow is indescribable. It also really showed me that Timbersled works in all types of snow; no matter where you are, Timbersled is definitely the go-to!
