John Legend may be originally known and respected for his music and its accolades, but lately he’s also had a significant role in the fashion and beauty world. He launched the AXE White Label Collective mentorship program and teamed up with designer Billy Reid and Esquire fashion director Nick Sullivan to help five up-and-coming menswear designers bring their talent to the next level for New York Fashion Week.
Before the event, John Legend chatted with Yahoo Beauty editor-in-chief Bobbi Brown about his style, his rise to fame, getting regular mani/pedis, his fitness regimen, and that time his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, really embarrassed him on Instagram — check out the highlights below!
When he first discovered he had talent – “I started playing piano when I was 4-years-old; my parents had a piano in the house and I grew up going to church with them and there was always music there and my mother was a choir director, my grandmother was a church organist, my father played the drums and sang in the choir so I was around a lot of music.”
He says his musical talent was a progression – “I’d been singing and writing songs since I was a young kid. I had always dreamed to be here, to be where I am now, but it takes a while for your dreams to come to reality.
On turning down Harvard – “I chose University of Pennsylvania. I don’t know, what was I thinking? I was so happy there. I got a better scholarship there. It took me 6 more years after that before I actually got a record deal. I was working with Kanye a lot and he helped me get a record deal, helped me make my first album and subsequent albums after that and it all really came together and it’s been a great career since then.”
On fashion & style & mentoring designers – “My approach to style is I just want to feel good, feel like I’m confident for the day. We started this with AXE White Label, we put out a call to designers and to musicians and we tried to pick the best people, the most deserving people of this opportunity. For the designers, we’ve given them a chance to come to New York, have their work seen here during Fashion Week, and get some advice for some people that could be helpful for them.”
He takes care of his skin and mani/pedis – “I take care of my skin, I clean it every day, you know, a nice facial cleanser. I use whatever my wife is using in the bathroom, so whatever is sitting in the shower, I use it. I get mani/pedis. Well I’m on the piano every day and my fingers are seen by everybody.
