MADDIE & TAE, the Oklahoma/Texas teen songwriters who flipped the discussion about a girl’s place in Country music, continue their winning ways as they pick up a nomination for Vocal Duo of the Year at the 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. Having just topped the prestigious Nashville Scene Country Critics Poll with Single of the Year for “Girl In A Country Song,” the accolades continue to stack up.
“Oh My God, I can’t breathe!” Maddie Marlow squeaked. “I can’t believe this. I just…I’ve been watching the ACM’s since I was little, and now we’re a part of it.”
“Maddie’s not kidding…We have watched these shows since we were little,” Tae Dye picks up. “And the idea of being in there with Brooks & Dunn and the Judds, Big + Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Sugarland…even before Florida Georgia Line…there are so many great duos, and we’re up there with them. It’s crazy.”
It is a little crazy how a pair of teenagers, frustrated with the way clichés were burying girls in the songs all the boys were singing, decided to write a cheeky little retort. Not quite “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels,” Country’s ultimate answer song, but with a wink and grin, the platinum blonds said everything people had been talking about for months.
“We thought it was funny, but we also thought it was something everyone was talking about, but nobody would come out and say,” Tae explains. “To us, it was such a fun writing session, only it turned into being rushed into the studio, making the record, putting out the single, and BOOM! I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“Our manager,” Maddie adds, “says she’s never seen anything like it, either. Suddenly, it’s Letterman and the TODAY show and seeing all these radio stations…just running and going and being here and there and gone. You don’t even realize, and they say things like ‘You’re record is #1’ and it’s a blur, but it’s such a good blur!”
“Thankfully, we got time over Christmas with our families to re-charge,” Tae adds. “So, I actually breathed for a second, thought, ‘ACM Vocal Duo of the Year!’ You know, a year ago we were two girls with a songwriting deal, trying to put being young and dreaming and struggling into songs…and now we’re nominated! It’s a lot to take in.”
The 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will broadcast live from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX on April 19
