There are many sit-coms that come and go on primetime television, but there are a few that are relatable, unique, and actually funny.
ABC’s American Housewife fits right in with all those traits, as the series follows Katie Otto (Katy Mixon), a confident, unapologetic wife and mother of three, who raises her flawed family in the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut, filled with “perfect” mommies and their “perfect” offspring. Katie’s perfectly imperfect world is upended when her neighbor’s decision to move notches her up from her ideal social standing and sets her on a path to ensure that doesn’t happen, regardless of the consequences.
Luckily, her husband, Greg Otto (Diedrich Bader), supports her in every way possible, but with a dash of reality thrown in as they work to ensure their children do not end up like everyone else. However, that isn’t going to be easy when her oldest teenage daughter, Taylor (Meg Donnelly), is already set on the “perfect” path; middle son Oliver (Daniel DiMaggio) has one goal in life: to be rich; and her youngest, Anna Kat (Julia Butters), needs a little extra help navigating life. Then there are her friends, Angela (Carly Hughes) and Doris (Ali Wong), who help Katie keep it all in perspective and are the allies she needs in a town where “keeping it real” is not a compliment.
Despite her flaws and unconventional ways, Katie ultimately only wants the best for her kids and will fight tooth-and-nail to instill some good old-fashioned values in them, if it’s the last thing she does.
Watch Meg Donnelly talk to us about the series on the red carpet at the 2017 People’s Choice Awards…
Before the People’s Choice Awards, Donnelly stopped by the Celeb Secrets studio to reveal a super-hilarious secret from working on American Housewife. Did you know she pulled a HUGE prank on her co-stars?
“I told some of the cast and crew members on set that I was actually married. They actually believed it, which was super crazy!”
In the season finale titled “Can’t Hide It Anymore,” Katie (Katy Mixon) has been avoiding the mandatory volunteer hours at her kids’ schools all year. But when the other moms pressure her, she hits on a genius excuse after wearing a fake pregnancy “empathy” bump leads everyone to think she is pregnant. But things soon get out of hand after her former frenemies plan a baby shower for her.
Make sure to catch the season one finale of American Housewife tonight @ 8:30PM ET/PT on ABC. You can catch re-runs beginning next Tuesday during the show’s timeslot.
