The Soledad O’Brien & Brad Raymond Starfish Foundation’s PowHERful Summit brought together 250 young women who are actively involved with the Foundation for a full day of empowerment this afternoon. The Summit aims to foster educational, professional and personal development through breakout sessions and workshops that build confidence.
American ballet dancer, as well as the first African-American female promoted to principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland gave the afternoon keynote “HERE’S HOW: Dance to Your Own Beat,” in which she encouraged young women to keep pushing and persevere despite obstacles they may face.
“I was the only black woman in a company of 80+ dancers for a decade and I felt like I didn’t belong. I heard I wasn’t right for the company, I wasn’t right for ballet. My skin was too dark, I was too muscular, my bust was too big,” said Copeland.
Former President of Entertainment for Telemundo Nely Galan kicked off the PowHERful Summit, and workshops were held by Macy’s, Google, Lyft, Capital One, and HHC throughout the day.
