Misty Copeland Gives Keynote at Starfish Foundation’s 2015 PowHERful Summi

The Soledad OBrien & Brad Raymond Starfish Foundation’sPowHERful Summit brought together 250 young women who are actively involved with the Foundation for a full day of empowerment this afternoon. The Summit aims to foster educational, professional and personal development through breakout sessions and workshops that build confidence.

American ballet dancer, as well asthe first African-American female promoted to principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre,MistyCopelandgave the afternoon keynote HERES HOW: Dance to Your Own Beat, in which she encouraged young women to keep pushing and persevere despite obstacles they may face.

I was the only black woman in a company of 80+ dancers for a decade and I felt like I didnt belong. I heard I wasnt right for the company, I wasnt right for ballet. My skin was too dark, I was too muscular, my bust was too big,said Copeland.

Former President of Entertainment for TelemundoNelyGalankicked off the PowHERful Summit, and workshops were held byMacy’s,Google,Lyft,CapitalOne, andHHCthroughout the day.
