Billboard and dick clark productions announced today that the band Simple Minds will perform their hit single “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” from the 1985 movie “The Breakfast Club” at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, which also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the iconic song reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band will be introduced to the stage by the film’s star, Molly Ringwald.
The Scottish alternative/pop band followed the smash hit of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” with four more top 40 singles, including “Sanctify Yourself” and the top 10-peaking “Alive & Kicking,” cementing an enduring legacy in which they have effortlessly straddled their pioneering early years with commercial success, making them one of the most important and influential bands of the past 35 years.
While best-known as a Golden Globe Award-nominated actress, Molly Ringwald has also visited the Billboard charts as a singer. In 2013, her jazz album Except Sometimes reached the top 10 on both the Jazz Albums and the Traditional Jazz Albums charts.
Simple Minds join previously announced musical performers Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Hozier, Nick Jonas, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Van Halen, along with special duet performances by “Empire” recording artists Jussie Smollett and Bryshere “Yazz” Gray with Estelle, Fall Out Boy featuring Wiz Khalifa, Little Big Town and Faith Hill, Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea and Meghan Trainor featuring John Legend.
The 2015 Billboard Music Awards will be hosted by Ludacris and Chrissy Teigen and broadcast LIVE from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 17, on ABC from 8:00 PM–11:00 PM ET.
