MTV is hosting its first-ever “Break the Record Week” this week, a five-day event in which the network will partner with its audience, artists and celebrities to attempt GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® achievements and other feats from the ridiculous and to the sublime and CS4U has the scoop on what you can expect from it!
“Break the Record Week” kicked off yesterday at 11:00 p.m. ET, when a 24-hour Beyoncé dance marathon began outside MTV’s New York headquarters to attempt the Guinness World Record for “Longest Dance Relay Marathon.” “Break the Record Week” continues on Wednesday with #MostMeowsInAMinute; Thursday with #EpicWin Day; and concludes Friday when MTV will attempt the Guinness World Record for “Most Contributors to a Time Capsule in 24 Hours” with #2025TimeCapsule. Each record-breaking event will unfold across MTV on-air, online, on mobile and via social media.
“Our audience is made up dreamers, believers, and they love nothing more than to do something bigger and better than it has ever been done before,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV. “’Break the Record Week’ is all about highlighting the ways they are making their mark, from the astounding to the absurd.”
According to MTVInsights, 92% of 14-to-24-year-olds agree that world records are made to be broken and 83% agree it would be fun to break a world record with others. Millennials are intent on making their mark on the world. MTVInsights has found that while 72% of Millennials are afraid of not living up to their potential, 69% of Millennials agree with the statement “if I want to do something, no one is going to stop me.”

“Break the Record Week” kicks off with an attempt to set the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title for the “Longest Dance Relay Marathon” starting Monday, March 9 at 11 p.m. ET outside MTV HQ continuing until 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 10. The Beyoncé-Thon will solely feature music from Queen Bee as fans will dance toward the record. This ultimate dance party will be hosted by YouTube star Todrick Hall and feature celebrities and artists such as Nick Lachey and Michelle Buteau from VH1 Big Morning Buzz Live as they join the effort.
The Beyoncé-Thon will come to life across all MTV platforms with a livestream at mtv.com/beyoncethon and will include a picture-in-picture live dance feed on MTV as well as live check-ins throughout the day.
“I am so freakin’ excited about setting the world record for the longest dance relay marathon,” said Todrick. “I’m thrilled and honored to be representing MTV as the host for this event but I’m CRAZY IN LOVE with the fact that I’ll be listening to Beyoncé’s music for a whole 24 hours! Let’s do this!”
On Wednesday, MTV will task cats everywhere – actually feline or other – to try to say “meow” the most times in a minute.Grumpy Cat and “The Vampire Diaries” Kat Graham will co-host on-air and challenge MTV viewers and social fans to submit their own attempts at meowing with the hashtag #MostMeowsInAMinute.
The day will feature videos of record-breaking attempts from artists including Ne-Yo, Nick Jonas, Snooki and others across all MTV social platforms and on-air. The record-setting video will be featured on MTV at 11 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 11.
“I’m very excited to be a part of MTV’s Break the Record Week, especially with my single 1991 coming out tomorrow,” said Kat Graham. “It’s going to be wild hosting with a talking cat, and trying to break the record myself. Silliness at its ultimate.”
“I’ve done a lot of things before. But this may be the worst of all,” said Grumpy Cat. “I’ll be trying to break the record for most naps on live television.”
Thursday: #EpicWin Day
On Thursday, MTV will challenge its audience to try and break their own personal records, whether it’s doing 1000 pushups or getting out of bed without hitting snooze. Fans can share their achievements using #EpicWin and MTV will share many of them on-air, on MTV.com and via MTV social media. MTV will also showcase aspiring world record holders throughout the day. #EpicWin Day will conclude with the premiere of MTV’s new competitive cup stacking special, “Epic Win,” which premieres on Thursday, March 12 at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
In the spirit of #EpicWin Day, Charlamagne Tha God and “The Challenge’s” Johnny Bananas and Jordan Wiseley will challenge each other back and forth all day on Thursday to push each other to break various personal records.
“I am extremely excited to participate in this simply because I really enjoy watching Jordan and Johnny Bananas embarrass themselves and their antics make great material for my Instagram,” said Charlamagne as he gears up for the challenge.
Starting at 11pm ET on Thursday MTV will look to the future to try to set the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the “Most Contributors to a Time Capsule in 24 Hours.” Hosted by Zuri Hall, MTV will ask people to express their wish for humankind in the year 2025 by using #2025TimeCapsule across social media until 11pm ET on Friday. Each wish will be printed or recorded and buried in a time capsule and unearthed 10 years from now.
Throughout the day, MTV will highlight the best submissions from the week on-air and across its social platforms while collecting additional wishes until midnight.
