One Direction Snags “BEst UK/Ireland Act” of the 2012 MTV EMAs! (@MTVEMA @OneDirection)

It was a tough competition across all of UK/Ireland! MTV today announced thatOne Direction has been named Best UK/Ireland Act of the “2012 MTV EMA,” having received the most votes from fans. Hosted by supermodel, entrepreneur and hometown girl Heidi Klum, the 19th annual awards show will broadcast live from Frankfurt’s historic Festhalle on Sunday, 11th November at 9PM CET* on MTV channels around the world, and is sponsored by partners such as Microsoft and Replay.

One Direction will now vie against fellow winners from across Europe for the chance to represent the region in the Worldwide Act category, which celebrates the range and breadth of all the music that MTV has to offer by showcasing incredible artists from all parts of the world. From now until October 30th, fans will be able to vote for their favorite regional act on

The representative for Europe will be announced on Tuesday, October 30th, along with the other regional winners from Latin America, North America, Asia Pacific and Africa/India/Middle East. These five regional nominees will then battle for votes for the “Worldwide Act” distinction, and the winner will be named at the show in Frankfurt.

In just a year, British boy band One Direction (Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson) have become one of the biggest bands in the world, period. Their single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ debuted at number one on the U.K. charts last year, and then the international takeover began. Their debut ‘Up All Night’ is the first album by a U.K. band to enter the U.S. charts at number one. In August, 1D had the honour of performing at the London Olympics closing ceremony.

Taylor Swift, MuseNo Doubt, Carly Rae Jepsen, fun. and Rita Ora are confirmed to perform at the “2012 MTV EMA.” MTV will announce additional EMA performers and presenters at a later date. As previously announced,Rihanna and Taylor Swift top the list of the “2012 MTV EMA” nominees with six and five nods, respectively, withJustin Bieber and Katy Perry following closely behind with four nominations each. Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj, Carly Rae Jepsen, fun., Jay Z and Kanye West each received three EMA nominations, whileGreen Day, Gotye, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Rita Ora, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Jack White and One Direction are up for two awards.
