The One Direction hiatus (and months of endless tears) has begun.

The quartet performed live for the last time (until 2017) on the finale of The X Factor U.K. on Sunday, December 13th. They have been going strong for the last five years ever since they placed third on the competition themselves. The tears were definitely flowing as they gave performed the two amazing tracks, Infinity and History, from the latest album Made In The A.M. Although One Direction are still set to be featured On Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, their performance is prerecorded.

The “well-earned break” was confirmed by the boys themselves back in August and Directioners couldn’t agree with their decision more. Although it is painful to see them go, they know how badly 1D needs one considering they’ve released an album every year followed by a lengthy tour.

Fresh from their emotionally nostalgic performance, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles posted a video on the band’s twitter account thanking their fans for the endless support they’ve given over the years.

“This is just a massive, massive thank you to all of our fans. Obviously you guys made all this happen for us and we can’t believe the way that you’ve supported us over the last five years. Today’s a very special day for us because this is like the last part of our first chapter. But a massive thank you, honestly. We cannot believe you guys. You’re amazing, the most dedicated people I think we’ve ever seen in our lives, so thank you for enjoying us over the years. And I hope there’s many more years to come.” -Liam Payne

Have a wonderful break boys and remember: when you’re ready to come back, we’ll be greeting you with open arms. This isn’t goodbye, just a “see you later”.
