Q&A: 11 Year Old Lou Lou Safran Shares What It’s Like Starring in Annabelle: Creation

We wish we were as cool as Lou Lou Safran when we were 11 years old!

The actress is set to star in the new horror blockbuster Annabelle: Creation, in theaters this Friday.

Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to 2014’s Annabelle and the fourth film in The Conjuring film series. The story is focused on a dollmaker and his wife, whose daughter died twelve years earlier, as they decide to open their home to a nun and several girls from an orphanage that has been closed. The dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle, sets her sights on the girls turning their shuttered shelter into a storm of terror.

Lou Lou plays one of seven orphans who are left homeless when their orphanage shuts down, and winds up staying in the home of an elderly couple. Little do the orphans know that their time in the house is soon to take a turn for the worse.

Before Annabelle: Creation, Lou Lou appeared in The Choice, based on the best seller by Nicholas Sparks. Truly an old soul, Lou Lou finds inspiration in Grace Kelly and one of her favorite dancers of all time, Fred Astaire. Some of her favorite movies include “Clue” and “Singing In The Rain.”

Celeb Secrets caught up with Lou Lou to talk about working on Annabelle: Creation and some BTS secrets from filming, her love for Arctic Monkeys, and what she likes doing on her downtime. Take a read at the Q&A below for more!

Make sure to catch Annabelle: Creation in theaters on Friday, August 11th and follow Lou Lou on Instagram at @loulousafran.

Celeb Secrets: You play a young orphan in the highly-anticipated horror film, ‘Annabelle: Creation’. What are some of your favorite horror films?

Lou Lou Safran: “I am terrified of scary movies and they absolutely fascinate me too. So I have seen scenes from the first Annabelle and both The Conjuring films, but I have not seen them from beginning to end yet. Annabelle Creation will be the first whole horror film I’ll see! Having been on set for so many days and watching how all that scary movie magic is made, I think I will be ok this time.”

Celeb Secrets: How was the vibe like on set of ‘Annabelle’ versus the set of ‘The Choice’?

Lou Lou Safran: “Annabelle Creation has a totally different style of course. It is a supernatural thriller while The Choice is a romantic drama. The sets could not be more different from each other – The Choice was bright and cheery and we shot most of the scenes on a sunny green property by the water. Annabelle takes place in a creepy old house with locked rooms and dark corners and it was designed so well that every time I stepped into it I was transported to the 1950s. But when it comes to the actual atmosphere on the set, I have to say that both movies were quite similar. Annabelle’s director David Sandberg and The Choice’s Ross Katz are both geniuses at what they do and also super nice people, so the energy on the set was always high and everybody happy and excited to be making the movie. On Annabelle, since I got to work with five other awesome girls, no matter how scary the scenes were, you could always hear giggles.”

Celeb Secrets: Do you see yourself becoming a Scream Queen and auditioning for more horror films or do you want to tackle roles in a different film genre?

Lou Lou Safran: “I would love to explore all genres, but I sure hope to make another horror. I discovered that I really like running and screaming at the top of my lungs.”

Celeb Secrets: You mentioned in one of Instagram videos that you wanted to put up your own YouTube channel, how is that going?

Lou Lou Safran: “Really well, thank you so much for asking! It is up but so far the only video there is me feeding cupcakes to a monkey. But my first music clip is uploading as we speak, so it should be up in a few hours. I filmed it myself and tried to edit it with shots from two angles – my first efforts, so do not expect miracles. It’s all for fun and practice, so it’s all good. I love the piano, singing and making movies so much, that I am willing to experiment and I’m not too scared of being judged. Nobody’s perfect!”

Celeb Secrets: It’s no secret that you’re a huge fan of Arctic Monkeys, but are there any other bands that you love?

Lou Lou Safran: “This probably won’t come as a surprise since I am an Alex Turner fanatic, that I am also nuts about The Last Shadow Puppets, his side project with Miles Kane. But I am crazy about loads of bands and great music. I LOVE Radiohead and got to see them last month at the Santa Barbara Bowl. They were on fire! I love everything Thom York does with and without Radiohead and their music videos are always so strange and beautiful. I never get tired of Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, my uncle Mick Jaroszyk’s awesome band Burn This Song – you have to check out their cover of Black Betty on youtube, it’s craaaaazy! The Gorillaz, Jeff Buckley, Thievery Corporation, Willie Nelson, and I have always loved the crooners Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. I could go on all day..”

Celeb Secrets: What would you consider your dream role to be?

Lou Lou Safran: “I wish I could play a kid super hero! I would want to do all the stunts myself too. I love funny situations and practical jokes, so it would be amazing to be in a comedy. And if someone makes a movie with Alex Turner, I would definitely want to play opposite him. He writes the best, most poetic lyrics and music and he’s great in live shows, so I bet he would be incredibly fun to be in a movie with.”

Celeb Secrets: What do you like to do on your down time?

Lou Lou Safran: “Playing or listening to music – I love the piano but I recently discovered the ukulele and I’m kind of obsessed with it. I learnt Hallelujah and I’ve been spending hours playing it. I play tennis and swim a lot too, I love climbing trees with my friends, singing and dancing. We are nuts about sleepovers. I couldn’t live without travel either and I am a big reader. I finished Harry Potter a couple of months ago and recently got into a beautiful series of three called Inkheart. I am also reading In The Desert and Wilderness in Polish, which I got from my Grandparents and it’s so exciting! It takes place in the African desert and there’s danger and suspense everywhere. To be in an epic adventure movie like this would be amazing!”

Celeb Secrets: When did you realize that you wanted to be an actress?

Lou Lou Safran: “My Mom is a singer songwriter and my Daddy is a film producer so all my life I have been surrounded by the arts and all types of artistic people, but I got seriously interested in acting when I was five and in my Mom’s new music video. I was fascinated and knew that acting was what I wanted to do.”

Celeb Secrets: Since we are Celeb Secrets, can you share a fun behind-the-scenes secret from ‘Annabelle: Creation’ that people may not know about?

Lou Lou Safran: “Wow, you are really putting me on the spot here 😉 but I think I can find a few to share with you. Every day on set at lunchtime all the girls and our ‘nun’ Stephanie Sigman would have lunch in my room, we would all sit together, chat and giggle the entire time. We played games and told one another many secrets but we vowed not to repeat those ;P. We ate three times our weight in Lifesavers during the shoot and I still have three in my drawer. Also, I hate to break it to everyone, but, we didn’t have real demons running around… but maybe that’s because we had a real priest come on the set the first day of shooting to bless the production and ward off any real evil that might have lurked around..”
