After nearly 20 years and over 3,000 episodes of laughter, Ellen DeGeneres is reportedly stepping down from her day show.
The world-renowned talk show host and comedian is making her exit amid allegations of a toxic work environment from her employees, according to The New York Post.
DeGeneres personally clarified the rumors in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this morning (May 12). “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” she says.
The report also says ending the show after 19 seasons has been a long-time plan for 63-year-old DeGeneres, who decided to keep the show going a bit longer amid conflict with “affiliates and the stations” amid season 16. “If I was quitting the show because of that, I wouldn’t have come back this season. So, it’s not why I’m stopping,” she explains in the article.
While on the topic of accusations of bullying on set, DeGeneres blames the backlash on cancel culture, saying she often feels as though there is simply no tolerance for her to make human mistakes.
She tells The Hollywood Reporter on a general note, “the culture today is one where you can’t learn and grow, which is, as human beings, what we’re here to do.”
