Zendaya has always been a huge risk taker when it comes to fashion. I love how she’s not afraid to switch up her hair and do something completely out of the box every red carpet. So this Oscar red carpet wasn’t any different.
Zendaya decided to strut the red carpet with a beautiful, white, long silk dress paired with dreadlocks. But the Fashion Police objected & Guiliana Rancic made a statement that offended the teen star. On the show, Guiliana said that Zendaya’s hair made her look like “she smells like patchouli oil…or maybe weed?” Harsh much?
Zendaya decided to take to Twitter and Instagram to express her feelings and “disrespectful” the comments were, saying it was an “outrageously offensive stereotype.” She continued, “There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect.”
Lastly, she added, “To say I’m an 18-year-old young woman with love must smell of patchouli oil or ‘weed’ is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.”
Zendaya goes on by saying why she decided to wear her hair in locs and to her it represents a “symbol of strength and beauty, almost like a lion’s mane.”
Since then Guiliana Rancic decided to apologize on Twitter by tweeting, “Dear @Zendaya, I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race & NEVER would!!!”
Do you think Guiliana went to far? What do you think of Zendaya’s rebuttle?
