Inside Tight End University’s Star-Studded Night: Taylor Swift and Lainey Wilson Shock Nashville with a ‘Love Story’ Duet

There are concerts, and then there are Nashville nights that instantly become part of Music City lore.

The annual Sports Illustrated and Tight End University Tight Ends & Friends Concert Presented by Reese’s delivered exactly that on Tuesday (June 23), transforming The Pinnacle into the hottest ticket in town for an evening where country music, football and pop culture collided in the most effortless way possible.

Founded by NFL stars Travis Kelce, George Kittle and Greg Olsen, the now-beloved Tight End University tradition has evolved into much more than a training summit. It’s become one of the year’s most unique entertainment events, bringing together the league’s biggest names alongside chart-topping artists for a celebration that’s equal parts community, competition and unforgettable live music.

And while the lineup was already stacked with fan favorites like Dan + Shay, Chase Rice, Jon Pardi, Nate Smith, Mitchell Tenpenny, Brett Young, HARDY and The War and Treaty, anyone who’s attended Tight Ends & Friends knows to always expect the unexpected. And this year, that unexpected moment belonged to Taylor Swift.

Just when it felt like the night had already reached its peak, surprise guest Lainey Wilson walked onto the stage with a smile that hinted she was keeping one very big secret.

Sharing a heartfelt story about seeing Swift perform on a tiny CMA Fest Riverfront Stage years ago when they were both teenagers, Wilson reflected on watching one of country music’s brightest young stars become a global icon.

“She is just as kind as she is talented,” Wilson told the sold-out crowd before introducing one of her closest friends.

Moments later, Swift appeared onstage to deafening screams as thousands of phones lit up The Pinnacle. Together, the longtime friends performed an acoustic version of “Love Story,” instantly creating the kind of full-circle Nashville moment that simply can’t be scripted.

Swift even added another memorable twist before the song began.

“We have a special request by a very special tight end who wanted to hear a particular song,” she teased.

Naturally, the audience assumed she was talking about fiancé Travis Kelce. Instead, Swift laughed before revealing the real requester.

“That tight end… is named George Kittle.”

The playful dedication immediately became one of the night’s biggest laughs — and perhaps its sweetest surprise— showcasing the genuine friendships that have become the foundation of Tight End University.

As the opening chords of “Love Story” echoed throughout the venue, fans sang every lyric back while Swift and Wilson traded verses in a performance that felt both intimate and larger-than-life. At one point during the iconic bridge, Swift even appeared to subtly acknowledge recent engagement buzz by flashing her ring hand during the famous lyric, “He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring,” sending the already electric crowd into another frenzy.

For Celeb Secrets, witnessing the moment firsthand felt less like watching a concert and more like watching one of those “you had to be there” moments unfold in real time. But while Swift undoubtedly delivered the night’s most talked-about headline, the rest of the evening never slowed down.

Dan + Shay turned an impromptu request from George Kittle into a patriotic singalong by reprising their now-viral rendition of the National Anthem before launching into favorites like “Speechless,” “10,000 Hours” and “Tequila.”

“We’ve been cupping,” Dan jokes to Us Weekly when talking about the duo’s National Anthem performances both at the FIFA World Cup and NHL Stanley Cup Final earlier this month.

“Just getting that opportunity, first of all, we’re so grateful, but the response has been insane. It started with the response in the stadium in SoFi [Stadium]. Halfway through they put David Beckham and Tom Cruise up on the screen, and I feel like we almost lost it in that moment. We held it together, but it was the biggest look of our career. It’s still on socials going crazy,” he reflects.

Nate Smith transformed his set into one giant party after hopping off the stage and weaving through the packed crowd while performing hits including “Whiskey On You,” “Bulletproof” and “World on Fire.”

“I’m not going back onstage,” he joked. “I’m partying with you guys tonight.”

Mitchell Tenpenny had the audience screaming every word to his emotional cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” while The War and Treaty opened the evening with powerhouse vocals that reminded everyone exactly why they’re one of country music’s most captivating live acts. Brett Young turned The Pinnacle into one giant sing-a-long with his hooky love songs while notable acts Chase Rice and HARDY performed their chart-topping hits that they both wrote and sing, showing the crowd that they equally deserved their spots on the lineup.

Elsewhere throughout the night, the surprises just kept coming. Luke Combs stopped by to spend time with the tight ends, comedian Shane Gillis joined the Bussin’ With The Boys crew onstage, and Travis Kelce and George Kittle — never ones to shy away from embracing the fun — had the crowd roaring after completing a keg stand that perfectly summed up the event’s carefree, summer-party atmosphere.

Even an unfortunate last-minute lineup change couldn’t dampen the excitement. Kane Brown was forced to withdraw after suffering a concussion and requiring 23 stitches following an accidental golf ball injury earlier that day, but the rotating list of surprise guests ensured the energy inside The Pinnacle never dipped.

That ability to continually surprise fans is something George Kittle says has become one of Tight End University’s defining characteristics.

Speaking with Us Weekly on the carpet, Kittle reflected on watching the event grow into something much bigger than anyone initially imagined.

“It is very humbling because the fact that this many tight ends care enough to come back and hang out with everybody… it just means the world to us,” Kittle shared. “It just makes me so happy that people want to be a part of this and they want to spend their time here in Nashville with us, learn a little bit, have some fun, and also listen to country music—and maybe a little golf.”

That sense of gratitude remained front and center when discussing his fellow founders, Travis Kelce and Greg Olsen.

“Every year is so much fun with Greg and Travis, and the fact that us three just keep coming back together and doing it over and over again is super exciting,” Kittle said. “It baffles me how we continually just up the ante every single year.”

After spending the evening inside The Pinnacle, it’s hard to disagree. What makes Tight End University special isn’t simply the celebrity appearances or viral moments, but the authenticity behind them. The artists genuinely want to be there. The players become fans. The fans feel like they’re witnessing something exclusive yet incredibly personal.

That same community-first spirit extended well beyond the concert itself thanks to Raising Cane’s, which once again played a major role throughout TEU.

During the three-day summit, the beloved chicken finger brand kept players fueled with meals served straight from the iconic Cane’s Food Truck, becoming a popular stop between workouts, meetings and film sessions. Founder Todd Graves also spent time with players, sharing lessons from building one of America’s fastest-growing restaurant brands while emphasizing leadership, perseverance and creating a winning culture — values that align seamlessly with what TEU is all about.

And that’s ultimately why the event continues to resonate. One minute you’re watching future Hall of Fame tight ends swap stories. The next you’re belting out “Love Story” with Taylor Swift and Lainey Wilson. Somewhere in between, Travis Kelce is doing a keg stand while George Kittle is requesting his favorite Taylor Swift song.

Tight Ends & Friends has become far more than an annual concert — and if Kittle is right about continuing to raise the bar every year, we can only imagine what Tight End University has in store next summer.
