As expected, Sydney McLaughlin, 21, will be repping the red, white and blue in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The Jersey girl will be entering her second Olympics after placing first in the 400-meter hurdles at 51.90 seconds; and yes, that’s a world record! A record that was actually held by competitor, Dalilah Muhammad.
McLaughlin and Muhammad, 31, are fierce rivals and often go head to head in hurdles. Muhammad, who also qualified for a spot on Team USA, is the reigning Olympic and World Champion. At the 2019 World Championships, the 31-year-old set the former world record at 52.16 seconds.
Sydney went on to shatter that record by 0.26 seconds and she was completely ecstatic about it. “It’s an honor,” McLaughlin said. “So many amazing women have come before me. So many amazing women will come after me. I just want to be able to leave my mark, and be a part of such an amazing sport.”
