It’s official! Allyson Felix is making her fifth and final trip to the Olympics this summer.
Felix qualified in the 400-meter sprint after finishing second to Quanera Hayes. While it may look easy for the 35-year-old, the journey to get that coveted spot definitely wasn’t.
The six-time gold medalist faced doubts of her ability to recover after enduring a difficult childbirth of her daughter that left her in the ICU for a month. However, Felix has been determined to prove that even moms can compete on the elite level as part of her fight for maternal rights.
Felix’s 2-year-old girl, Cameryn, was there to experience her mom’s victory. When asked about Cameryn, Felix said, “I just wanted to really show her, no matter what, that you do things with character, integrity, and you don’t give up. And to me, whether that was winning, losing, no matter the outcome, I wanted to stay consistent with that. Having her as motivation through these past couple of years has just given me a whole new drive.”
Allyson Felix isn’t the only track mom that will be sprinting on the Tokyo track. Hayes, who beat Felix by 24 hundredths of a second in the 400-meter dash, was also joined on the track by her son, Demetrius.
