78th Annual Golden Globe Awards – Winner Predictions

It’s almost time to kick off awards season with the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards!

While we wait just a few more days until the big show, Celeb Secrets is giving you our thoughts on who will win that famous golden globe at this year’s show in ALL of the categories. To no surprise, Netflix dominates the 78th annual event with 42 total nominations for its movies and shows, including “Mank,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “The Queen’s Gambit” and “The Crown.” Amazon, home to “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Small Axe,” followed with 10 nominations, while Hulu also picked up 10 nominations for fare like “Normal People” and “Palm Springs.”

Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air LIVE from both the famed Rainbow Room in New York and the iconic Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, on Sunday, February 28th @ 7PM ET/4PM PT on NBC.

TELEVISION

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

Nominees: “Emily in Paris” (Netflix), “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “The Great” (Hulu), “Schitt’s Creek” (CBC), “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV Plus)

Who We Think Will Win: Despite not getting any nominations during its run, the iconic comedy show Schitt’s Creek landed 5 nominations in this year’s award shows for its final season. We believe, just like in the 2020 Emmy’s, this show will be getting big awards!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama

Nominees: Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Al Pacino (“Hunters”), Matthew Rhys (“Perry Mason”)

Who We Think Will Win: After his third year getting nominated for his role in the popular Netflix original series, Ozark,  we think it’s finally time the Golden Globes will recognize Jason Bateman’s incredible acting as main character, Marty Byrde, in the show.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees: Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”), Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”), Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”)

Who We Think Will Win: The Queen’s Gambit made its way into the hearts of many over the past year, and Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance as Beth Harmon is definitely one of the reasons why. We believe this actress will be getting a checkmate in this category!

Netflix

Best Television Series – Drama

Nominees: “The Crown” (Netflix), “Lovecraft Country” (HBO Max), “The Mandalorian” (Disney Plus), “Ozark” (Netflix), “Ratched” (Netflix)

Who We Think Will Will: The Netflix Original series, The Crown, is sure to get many awards this year, and we have no doubt that this will be one of them! The writers and creators stepped up their game for season four, and their efforts will definitely pay off.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama

Nominees: Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Emma Corrin (“The Crown”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Sarah Paulson (“Ratched”)

Who We Think Will Win: Another category we believe The Crown will sweep, the show scored two deserved nominations in this category, but we believe newcomer Emma Corrin will take Olivia Colman’s throne this year.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees: Bryan Cranston (“Your Honor”), Jeff Daniels (“The Comey Rule”), Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”), Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”)

Who We Think Will Win: This category of A-list celebrities have all had great performances in their respective roles, and it’s not surprising that they’re nominated! But we think Mark Ruffalo’s performance as the identical twins, Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, in I Know This Much Is True will push him right across the finish line!

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

Nominees: Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Jane Levy (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”), Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”)

Who We Think Will Win: Catherine O’Hara’s performance as Moira Rose in the hit comedy, Schitt’s Creek, will definitely get her the winning spot in this category! After being snubbed for her performance throughout the past five seasons, we feel like O’Hara will snag the award for the show’s final season!

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees: “Normal People” (Hulu/BBC), “The Queen’s Gambit” (Netflix), “Small Axe” (Amazon Studios/BBC), “The Undoing” (HBO), “Unorthodox” (Netflix)

Who We Think Will Win: The Queen’s Gambit is sure to take home this award this year and it’s not by chance! The compelling storyline of main lead Beth Harmon, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, has caught the attention of everyone, which makes us believe that this will be a very obvious win!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees: John Boyega (“Small Axe”), Brendan Gleeson (“The Comey Rule”), Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Jim Parsons (“Hollywood”), Donald Sutherland (“The Undoing”)

Who We Think Will Win: John Boyega’s performance in Small Axe is nothing short of amazing, which makes him well deserving of his first nomination and (predicting to be!) first win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

Nominees: Don Cheadle (“Black Monday”), Nicholas Hoult (“The Great”), Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”)

Who We Think Will Win: Despite Dan Levy’s incredible performance in Schitt’s Creek, we think Jason Sudeikis will sweep in and take the win for his heartwarming performance as Ted Lasso

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees: Gillian Anderson (“The Crown”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Cynthia Nixon (“Ratched”)

Who We Think Will Win: Another double nomination for the series, The Crown, but we’re sure Gillian Anderson has got it in the bag. Her performance as former UK prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, will snag her the crown in this category.

MOVIES

Best Director – Motion Picture

Nominees: Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”), David Fincher (“Mank”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”),  Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”)

Who We Think Will Win: We have three women up for Best Director this year and only five have ever been nominated in this category during the 78 years the Golden Globes have been around, so we think that Chloe Zhao’s stellar work in Nomadland will take the prize.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Nominees: Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Kate Hudson (“Music”), Michelle Pfeiffer (“French Exit”), Rosamund Pike (“I Care a Lot”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“Emma”)

Who We Think Will Win: This prediction is a bit obvious because who doesn’t love a good underdog story? With Borat Subsequent Moviefilm being Maria Bakalova’s first blockbuster film, she’s a sure winner. A real star in the making!

Netflix

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Nominees: Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Gary Oldman (“Mank”), Tahar Rahim (“The Mauritanian”)

Who We Think Will Win: The late Chadwick Boseman did his career-best in the adaptation of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and with his passing last year, this win would just add more significance.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Nominees: Sacha Baron Cohen (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), James Corden (“The Prom”), Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”), Dev Patel (“The Personal History of David Copperfield”), Andy Samberg (“Palm Springs”)

Who We Think Will Win: Sacha Baron Cohen won this award back in 2007 for the original “Borat” so him taking home the award again for his performance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm wouldn’t be a surprise.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Nominees: Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”), Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”)

Who We Think Will Win: Although there are many strong contenders here, Carey Mulligan’s performance in Promising Young Woman as an angel of vengeance going against abusive men demands attention so she’s sure to walk away with a trophy for her work.

THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (L to R) SACHA BARON COHEN as Abbie Hoffman, JEREMY STRONG as Jerry Rubin in THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7. Cr. NIKO TAVERNISE/NETFLIX © 2020

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Nominees: “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Mank” (Netflix), “Nomadland” (Searchlight Pictures), “Promising Young Woman” (Focus Features), “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Netflix)

Who We Think Will Win: The Trial of the Chicago 7 is definitely the top-runner for this category with its five nominations alone, including one for Best Screenplay, and it also has the dramatics that the HFPA loves.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Nominees: Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”), Bill Murray (“On the Rocks”), Leslie Odom, Jr. (“One Night in Miami”)

Who We Think Will Win: Even though Sacha Baron Cohen did a fantastic job in “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” he’s most likely to win his nomination for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” which is why we think Daniel Kaluuya will win for his invigorating performance in Judas and the Black Messiah.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Nominees: “The Midnight Sky” – Alexandre Desplat, “Tenet” – Ludwig Göransson, “News of the World” – James Newton Howard, “Mank” – Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, “Soul” – Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste

Who We Think Will Win: Christopher Nolan is known to rely on his film’s score to add an extra depth to the movie which is why we think Ludwig Göransson’s work in Tenet will be taking the award home.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Nominees: “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (Amazon Studios), “Hamilton” (Walt Disney Pictures), “Palm Springs” (Neon), “Music” (Vertical Entertainment), “The Prom” (Netflix)

Who We Think Will Win: With Lin-Manuel Miranda writing the entirety of Hamilton himself (in a span of seven years no less) and the musical constantly being sold out at the box office, this win is a no-brainer.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Nominees: Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Jodie Foster (“The Mauritanian”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”), Helena Zengel (“News of the World”)

Who We Think Will Win: Once again, although there is tough competition in this category, Olivia Colman is loved by the HFPA, winning her Golden Globe nominations for the past three years.

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language

Nominees: “Another Round” (Samuel Goldwyn Films), “La Llorona” (Shudder), “The Life Ahead” (Netflix), “Minari” (A24), “Two of Us” (Magnolia Pictures)

Who We Think Will Win: The HFDA caught heat for snubbing Minari a Best Motion Picture – Drama nomination, especially after it getting this nomination even though it was an American-made film. Either way, the incredible story and work done by the cast will surely win them this award.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

Nominees: Emerald Fennell – “Promising Young Woman,” Jack Fincher – “Mank,”  Aaron Sorkin – “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Florian Zeller, Christopher Hampton – “The Father,” Chloe Zhao – “Nomadland”

Who We Think Will Win: With it’s incredibly unique and eye-catching storyline, Emerald Fennell’s work with Promising Young Woman is a top contender for this award. Who doesn’t love an avengeance story?

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

Nominees: “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah” – H.E.R., Dernst Emile II, Tiara Thomas, “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago 7” – Daniel Pemberton, Celeste, “Io Si (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead” – Diane Warren, Laura Pausini, Niccolò Agliardi, “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami” – Leslie Odom Jr, Sam Ashworth, “Tigress & Tweed” from “The United States vs. Billie Holliday” – Andra Day, Raphael Saadiq

Who We Think Will Win: With “Hamilton” under Leslie Odom Jr’s belt and Sam Ashworth’s Grammy-nominated work, they’re both sure  winners with “Speak Now” from One Night in Miami.

Pixar

Best Motion Picture – Animated

Nominees: “The Croods: A New Age” (Universal Pictures), “Onward” (Walt Disney Pictures), “Over the Moon” (Netflix), “Soul” (Walt Disney Pictures), “Wolfwalkers” (Cartoon Saloon)

Who We Think Will Win: Since the category was first introduced in 2007, Walt Disney Pictures has won the title 10 times out of their 22 nominations. With an existential-crisis inducing film like Soul, which also has a nomination for Best Original Score, we think the studio will take the trophy home for this one.
