As if the 2022 MLB season couldn’t get any more bonkers, the ‘Home Run Derby X’ is here to push that narrative even further.
Announced earlier today, March 30, the ‘Home Run Derby X’ will be a global tournament which will take baseball across the globe, stopping in London, Seoul, and Mexico City. Unlike the usual Home Run Derby, which will take place on July 18 in Los Angeles, this one will be a scaled-down event and will feature not current, but former, MLB stars.
“Home Run Derby X is played on a reduced version of a baseball field, with Home Plate mounted on a stage and the Pitcher’s Mound on a podium,” the official press release reads. “The field of play is adaptable and has been designed to fit within a variety of environments, from festival sites to stadiums.”

The first Home Run Derby X tournament will commence on July 9, in Crystal Palace Park in London, England. The next two will take place on September 17 in Seoul, South Korea, and on October 15 in Mexico City (both venues for those cities have yet to be announced).
MLB has made it clear that this event is not only to spread the sport across the globe, but to make the experience itself world-renowned. “While Home Runs and epic catches steal the show, Home Run Derby X offers more than just big hits to event attendees. Each event will feature live music, baseball-inspired activities, ballpark food, fashion, gaming and more to push it to the next level and offer an unforgettable experience.”
The tournament is set to feature not only former MLB stars, but also women’s softball players and “content creators”, according to the press release. As of now, the format is still open to interpretation, with little detail actually being revealed and set in stone, but that ultimately adds to the magic of the anticipation.
