CAL Opens Up About Taking Unique Approach for Creating New Single “In The Water” (Exclusive)

It’s been over a year since CAL released original solo music, and his new song that dropped this past Friday (April 2) was definitely worth the wait!

The singer/songwriter and former Timeflies band member utilized his time at home during the pandemic doing what he does best — aka making music — which led to his latest single “In The Water” featuring Quinn XCII.

“I’m in a great place,” CAL tells Celeb Secrets in an exclusive interview. “I feel like a lot of that had to do with the growth of the last year and a half, but I have a song [coming out] and I’m just beside myself with excitement.”

The vibrant song (which we think is about to be a huge summer hit, btw) coincidentally came to the 32-year-old in the shower. After putting together a drum groove and progression, CAL went to TikTok to get some feedback from his friends, followers and others online to see if he should release it.

To no surprise, the reactions were insane. Fellow musician Quinn XCII even slid into his DMs asking CAL to save some room on the track for his own verse!

“I was very candid and just put it up on my socials, and I was like, ‘What do you guys think?'” CAL shares. “I would usually turn to someone in the room who I’m writing with and they’d be like, ‘this is awesome. Let’s keep going.’ But now I’m leaning on [my followers] and the response was incredible. Quinn XCII [also] reached out and said, ‘yo, I love this. You got to save me a verse.'”

“I am such a fan of his and had been looking for something to do with him, so when he said that I  was like, ‘I’m quarantined, are you quarantined?’ He was quarantined and we were able to get together and make the song,” he adds.

@whatupcalmusicPLEASE JUSGE ME. Is is song as 🔥 as I think it is?! #FYP #singer #viral

Co-written by CAL alongside Quinn XCII & Jorgen Odegard (whose recent credits include Justin Bieber’s “Holy” and Rosé from BLACKPINK’s “On The Ground”), “In the Water” is an effervescent representation built over an irresistible hook and cool beats of that indescribable, infatuating feeling – one that pulls you in, begs no explanation and compels you to just go with it; and one that CAL says was reflected in a case of life imitating art through the song’s creation process.

“In the Water” follows the success of his song “Dressed Up In White” which has amassed more than 4.5 million since its February 2020 release. The song, which CAL originally wrote for his now-wife long before they were married so that he could surprise her with it on their eventual wedding day, has taken on a new life through its virality and become a meaningful staple for so many other couples on their special day.

CAL initially found breakout success as co-founder of the gold-selling pop duo Timeflies, who announced their hiatus in August 2019. He released his first solo six-song EP The Identity Crisis: Side A in November of that year, and both “Dressed Up In White” and “In the Water” serve as a reflection of his growth and personal journey as a solo artist.
