Fast forward a few months later, the duo released their first duet, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The song was Cabello’s first taste as a solo artist outside of Fifth Harmony – though she was very much still in the group, and was written spontaneously backstage during a stop on Taylor Swift‘s The 1989 World Tour where Mendes was an opener and Fifth Harmony was a surprise guest. During an interview with Elvis Duran, the duo discussed their collaborative work, when recording the track together.
“We were so passionate about this song. As artists, we’re both so invested in what we sing about that that makes the whole experience so much more intense,” Cabello said.
In a Rolling Stone interview, Mendes said, “I pulled out my guitar and we were just messing around, not really thinking about writing a song.”
