Former MLB pitcher CC Sabathia has taken on a new position within the league. Earlier today, it was announced that the southpaw had accepted a position as the Special Assistant to the Commissioner.
Sabathia, who has been outspoken in fighting for players’ rights and promoting change and diversity within the game of baseball, now takes on this new position where these duties will be expected of him, but in a higher capacity. He has influenced a plethora of changes moving the game forward in the 21st century, including the creation of Players’ Weekend in 2017.
“As a special assistant to the Commissioner, Sabathia will be a liaison between the league and current players, working to grow the game and promote equity in baseball,” an MLB statement said. “He’ll also work on new initiatives with The Players Alliance, where he’s the vice president.”
After a 19-year career, @CC_Sabathia is the newest Special Assistant to the Commissioner. An advocate for amplifying diversity, strengthening the sport, and impacting the community, CC will bring a player's perspective as a liaison for decision making. Sabathia is a former pitcher and six-time All-Star who made his debut with the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) in 2001, and was pivotal in the Yankees’ 2009 World Series championship, which was his only championship. He pitched another ten seasons with the Yankees until his retirement following the 2019 season.
“I’m looking forward to sharing my viewpoint as a former Major League player with the Commissioner’s Office,” Sabathia said in a statement. “I want to be able to continue to give back to the game that I love so much. This new role gives me the opportunity to continue the work I’m passionate about, be an advocate for players and be able to contribute to the decision-making process of the league office after 19 years on the field. I can’t wait to get started.”
I love this game and the opportunity to bring about real change, diversity, developing the youth, and being a voice for the players. This new position with the @MLB Commissioner’s office is another step in that direction. Let’s get to work!!!

Commissioner Rob Manfred, who has come under fire in the past for his antics and handling of situations (most notably the 2017 Astros cheating scandal and the 2021-22 lockout), commented on the hiring of Sabathia. In a statement, he said, “We welcome CC’s positive energy, strong character, creative mind, and civic-minded approach in building on our efforts to strengthen the game, diversify the sport, and give back to the community. CC has a powerful voice in baseball, and we value the perspective he will bring to our office.”
