Dove Cameron Opens Up About Her Heartbreak After Split With Thomas Doherty

Dove Cameron gets candid about the heartbreak she had after her split with Thomas Doherty.

The Descendants actress 25, reveals about the heartbreak she felt after her split with her former co-star, Doherty, 26, and how it led to her writing her song “LazyBaby.”

The actress told Entertainment Tonight, “‘LazyBaby’ is about a breakup, or well, it follows post-breakup. I went through a very public breakup last year, and I was in a really bad place, like a really, really bad place,” she said. “The breakup f**ked me up. It was really hard, and I needed something that was going to get me from where I was, in the mourning process, into the other side.”

The couple met on the set of Descendants 2 and dated for four years before splitting back in October of last year. The former Disney star confirmed the breakup in a tweet back in December, stating, “hi all. In October, @thomasadoherty and I decided to part ways. The decision was incredibly difficult, but we still have love for each other, and will remain friends. Thank you for allowing us our privacy in this time.”

Even though it was a difficult time for Cameron, she put her emotions into her music. During the pandemic, she wrote and recorded her song, “LazyBaby,” which she describes as “satirical, comedic, [and] uplifting.” According to Cameron, her ex, “loves it,” too.

“He listens to it all the time. I sent it to him before it came out, and he still sends me voice notes all the time,” the artist says.

Although Cameron won’t reveal what exactly caused them to split, she says, “I personally believe we have many soulmates in this life, but I don’t think that somebody stops being a soulmate when you break up. I will love him differently now.”
