Dylan Playfair on How He Combines Both His Love for Hockey and Acting in Current Roles

Dylan Playfair is combining his love for both acting and hockey in the best way possible!

The 28-year-old actor and director, who you may remember as “Gil” in Descendants 2has been starring in numerous indie films and TV shows as — you guessed it — a hockey player.

“I really wanted to be a good hockey player when I was playing. I tried hard and I got a decent amount of the way there but I never made it, [however,] I kept that sort of desire to do something with hockey and I always thought that it would be so cool to act and be a hockey player,” Playfair tells Celeb Secrets over a Zoom call.

Dylan is the son of Jim Playfair, a former NHL player and current associate coach for the Edmonton Oilers, and was playing Junior A in British Columbia when he ultimately decided to make the career change.

“As time went on and I started to see the writing on the wall, I realized that I had an opportunity to make a transition and still apply that same amount of energy and focus from hockey but switch into film. What I’m doing was a lot harder on my brain, my face, and my health — I’m lucky I still have all my teeth,” he laughs.

“These opportunities come up to play hockey players and I jump on them because it’s something that I know. The way I play characters is I put themselves in their circumstances. It’s an easy thing for me to do with hockey players because I’ve been so close to that world for so long that it seems makes sense to me at the same time.

With five hockey roles under his belt, Dylan can currently be seen as Reilly in the newest season of Letterkenny on Hulu, Dean Hunter in Odd Man Rush, Shawn in Summerland, and Coach T in the highly-anticipated Mighty Ducks reboot The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers that’s hitting Disney+ in 2021.
