Marisol Nichols and Exodus Cry Prove “The Tide Is Turning” with Human Trafficking at Star-Studded Freedom Gala (Exclusive)

In the sun-drenched hills of Orange County, the Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point usually serves as a backdrop for coastal luxury and high-society soirées.

But this past Saturday (March 14), the air felt different. As the Pacific tide crashed against the cliffs below, a different kind of “tide” was being celebrated inside: a historic shift in the fight against human trafficking.

For Marisol Nichols, the evening was a rare moment of reflection. Known to Riverdale fans as the formidable Hermione Lodge, Nichols has spent over a decade playing an even more intense role off-camera—an undercover advocate fighting in the darkest corners of the exploitation industry.

Before the gala’s sunset cocktail reception, Celeb Secrets caught up with Nichols and Exodus Cry CEO Benjamin Nolot to go behind the scenes of a movement that is finally moving from the shadows into the spotlight.

When Nichols first joined the fight in 2012, the term “human trafficking” felt like a foreign concept to most.

“You just never heard those words,” Marisol told us. “I remember thinking, ‘Why isn’t this on the news? Why isn’t this everywhere?’ Back then, people thought it only happened in far-off places like Thailand or the Philippines. They didn’t realize it was happening in their own backyards.”

Fast forward to 2026, and the progress is undeniable. From the “Operation Cross Country” stings to the unsealing of high-profile exploitation files, the public is finally awake. “The tide is absolutely turning,” Nichols said with a visible sigh of relief in her voice. “It’s a personal goal reached to see this on everyone’s lips. Awareness is step zero, and we’ve finally arrived.”

For Nolot, the “turning tide” is measured in more than just headlines — it’s measured in the law books. Exodus Cry has been a powerhouse in legislative reform, recently helping secure a massive win: making the purchase of a child for sex a felony in California.

He pointed to a Swedish model where penalizing the buyers —rather than the victims — created a cultural norm that sex buying is inherently exploitative. “Laws, when properly understood and implemented, can help to normalize a culture that is in harmony with the heart behind those laws,” he shared. “We are hopeful that laws in the US will have a similar effect, and that the culture at large will begin to identify exploitation and trafficking where they once were blind to it.

The momentum doesn’t stop in Sacramento. Nolot highlighted a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling regarding age verification on adult sites as a cornerstone victory. “Childhood exposure to porn grooms kids to become sex buyers later in life — fueling sex trafficking. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that age verification is constitutional, and this was a huge win, not only for child protection but for helping to dismantle the foundation that trafficking is built on.

In a town built on smoke and mirrors, the most profound “secrets” are often the ones hidden in plain sight. For Marisol, her Hollywood training has become an unexpected tactical advantage in her undercover work. She’s developed a human lie detector that most wouldn’t expect from a TV star.

“People regular, everyday people are not the best actors,” she revealed, her tone shifting to one of sharp focus. “When I’m in these rooms briefing, I can tell almost immediately who is engaging in this activity. I see the ‘acting’ when they try to mirror my shock. I see the lie.” It’s a chilling reminder that the villains in this story aren’t just shadows — they are often people hiding behind a mask of normalcy.

But for Benjamin, the “secret” to their success lies in the power of unexpected redemption. The work is so pervasive that it has begun to flip the script on the industry itself. “As a result of our work exposing trafficking and sexual exploitation in the porn industry, we’ve actually had a few porn producers become convicted and leave the industry,” he revealed. “To win over people at this level, and turn them into allies, has been incredibly rewarding.”

The Gala itself was a masterclass in high-impact philanthropy, raising $120,000 for global initiatives. Amidst the Ritz-prepared dinner and the presence of stars like Grammy-winner DIXSON, the heart of the night remained on the survivors.

Exodus Cry’s Vice President of Impact, Helen Taylor, took to the stage to ground the evening’s festivities in the reality of their frontline work. “Our work is about real people and real pathways to freedom,” Taylor told the room of approximately 175 advocates and influencers. “Every step forward is the result of thousands of individuals refusing to accept exploitation as inevitable.”

The “Restoration” aspect of the night was backed by staggering statistics from the past year that left the room in awe. Exodus Cry has reached over 5,000 victims across 12 countries to give whatever resources are needed to escape exploitation; 1,500+ hours of trauma therapy has been provided to survivors who are navigating the difficult journey of rebuilding their lives; and the nonprofit’s investigative films have hit 100+ million global views, proving that when you shine a light on the darkness, the world watches.

One of the most poignant moments of the night came when father-and-son duo Roger and Keaton Gum were honored with the Angel Award. Roger’s moving tribute to the organization’s efficiency — noting that “there isn’t an organization with more impact per dollar than Exodus Cry” — brought a wave of affirmation from the crowd. By the end of the night, the Gala had raised $120,000, every cent of which is earmarked to fuel these global rescue and restoration initiatives.

The energy in the room reached a fever pitch with the announcement of Exodus Cry’s next major project: the investigative documentary High Class. Set to premiere on April 30, the film promises to pull back the curtain on the “high-class escort” industry in Las Vegas, featuring raw, firsthand accounts from women who were trapped in a system of trafficking despite the outward appearance of success.

After spending over a decade navigating the darkest corners of society, how does one keep their own light from burning out? For Marisol, the transition from the heavy, high-stakes world of anti-trafficking back to her life in Hollywood requires a conscious, almost sacred, return to the mundane.

“I go in and out of it,” she admitted, reflecting on the psychological toll of her undercover missions. “My acting career is what gives me the reach and the platform, but an organization like Exodus Cry — this is what they do 24/7. I’m able to come and speak, do an operation, or talk to high schoolers, but then I have to go back to being on set.”

That “in and out” is her survival mechanism. When the weight of the stories becomes too much, Nichols finds her peace in the simplest of rituals. “I know it sounds silly, but taking a walk in my neighborhood,” she shared with a smile. “Walking around, seeing people out with their dogs and their families, seeing the trees are green… it reminds me that there is still so much good out there.”

She recently reached a personal milestone that has provided even more of a sanctuary: moving into a new home where her daughter can create her own space and their dogs can run through the yard. “When you do this kind of work, you really focus on the dark parts of society. For me, it’s about putting my attention on the kids who are not being trafficked and the men who don’t engage in these things. It’s about reminding myself that the light still wins.”

As the evening concluded and the last of the guests departed the Ritz-Carlton, the message was clear: the tide isn’t just turning. It has arrived. And with advocates like Marisol Nichols and Benjamin Nolot holding the line, the future looks brighter than ever.
