The 2022 Billboard Music Awards just got a little more iconic with their latest announcement, as Mary J. Blige is set to receive the Icon Award at this year’s ceremony.
The Billboard Icon Award recognizes the artists’ achievements on the Billboard charts as well as their overall artistry. Blige is the perfect fit, having won a total of 10 Billboard awards including R&B Album of the Year (2006) and Female R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year (2006). She also joins a list of previous recipients that includes the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Stevie Wonder, P!NK and Mariah Carey.
In addition to receiving the award, the global superstar is set to put on a spectacular performance of her greatest hits before accepting the honor.
Moments after haring the news, Blige talked about how her career has allowed her to explore many avenues including acting and producing. She continued by saying, “Through it all, I always one way or another gravitated back to my first love, music. To be recognized in this way at this moment, with the Icon Award at the Billboard Awards, is an incredible honor and one that I am truly humbled by.”

The Billboard Music Awards have honored icons and artists for over 30 years. The award show continues to honor today’s musicians’ achievements. Finalist of the awards are determined by their performance on the Billboard Charts, which measure an artist’s songs and albums.
The 2022 Billboard Music Awards will take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 15 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and will stream live on Peacock. Fans who are looking to attend the event in person can purchase tickets starting at $90 here.
