The last time we spoke with 21-year-old Maya Abrahamsson we were discussing the launch of her new show, The Latest With Maya, where she interviews your favorite celebrities. Now, Maya is sharing another one of her passions – songwriting.
Maya explains that writing lyrics has always been something that helps her process her emotions and it was time to bring those lyrics to life. After teaming up with vocalist Anika Erickson, Maya released her first EP titled Shattered (Stories by Maya) under the pseudonym M.R.A. on all major streaming platforms.
The six song EP intricately weaves together stories of love, heartbreak, and more, showcasing Maya’s writing ability along with edgy vocals and sleek production from Erickson.

Celeb Secrets: Hi Maya! It is great to chat with you again. Congratulations on releasing “Shattered.” Can you tell us a little bit about this project and what the inspiration was?
Maya Abrahamsson: “Thank you so much! It’s great to speak with you again! I’ve always loved writing lyrics, it helps me process what I’m going through and my emotions. There’s so many things that inspire my songs. Because of my illness, I haven’t had the life experience that other kids my age have had, which can feel isolating. So my songs are inspired by experiences I feel I’m missing, movies and T.V. shows that I lose myself in, and all the emotions of being a cancer patient.”
CS: How long have you been writing songs and what first got you interested in songwriting?
M: “I’ve always loved music and I started writing lyrics in elementary school because I had so many complicated emotions, so I started expressing them this way.I’ve always wanted to work with someone to bring my lyrics to life.”
CS: What was it like working with Anika and seeing your music come to life? What do you hope listeners take away from the songs?
M: “Working with Anika is incredible. She’s so talented. Hearing my songs come to life has been a dream come true. I hope my songs can help people the way my favorite songs have helped me. Making people feel understood and less alone and giving people an escape.”
CS: Do you have a favorite song that you’ve written and if so, why?
M: “For me, ‘Rose’ was a particularly powerful songwriting experience because for the first time I really expressed some of my fears and some of my own insecurities.”
