Scott Foley Opens Up About New Wonder Project Series “It’s Not Like That” And Why Heartfelt Family Dramas Are His Favorite To Make (Exclusive)

Wonder Project is kicking off 2026 with another powerful, heart-forward story, and this time, Scott Foley is at the center of it.

Following the success of House of David, the studio returns with It’s Not Like That, an eight-episode family drama premiering January 25 on Wonder Project’s subscription on Prime Video. Blending themes of grief, love, second chances, and what it really means to rebuild after loss, the series promises to deliver the raw, emotional storytelling Celeb Secrets readers love.

Created by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson (Life As We Know It, Parenthood), It’s Not Like That follows Malcolm (Foley), a pastor who is recently widowed and raising three children, and Lori (Erinn Hayes), a newly divorced mom of two teens. After life takes them in painfully different directions, both are forced to navigate a new reality — parenting alone, healing after heartbreak, rediscovering faith, and figuring out where connection fits into the aftermath of loss. Their story unfolds in a space that asks a question the title itself pushes back on: is this the beginning of a love story… or is it really “not like that” at all?

When Celeb Secrets spoke with Scott Foley backstage during Z100’s Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in New York on December 12, it was clear just how much this project means to him. He didn’t describe it as a flashy genre show or a high-concept series. Instead, he talked about its heart.

“It’s a family drama… my favorite kind of television,” Foley told us. “There’s no high concept. People aren’t living on another planet or under the earth. It’s just human stories told really well.”

That simplicity is exactly what makes the series so compelling. It doesn’t try to escape real life. It sits right inside it.

Foley also reflected on the experience of making the series, sharing that the connection among the cast and creative team made it especially meaningful.

“The experience was really special and I got to meet and work with some wonderful people,” he told us.

He even dished on spending several months filming in Atlanta — a city he admitted he didn’t expect to enjoy as much as he ultimately did. The sense of warmth and community he describes off-screen mirrors the emotional tone of the show itself, which centers on families trying to rebuild after everything has changed.

Alongside Foley, the cast includes Erinn Hayes as Lori, J.R. Ramirez, Caleb Baumann, Cary Christopher, Leven Miranda, Liv Lindell and Cassidy Paul, all helping bring this intertwined story of two families to life. The creators describe the series as one rooted in hope — a story about finding light after heartbreak, rebuilding from unexpected places, and choosing grace even when circumstances feel fragile and uncertain. It fits seamlessly into Wonder Project’s growing lineup of programming designed to uplift audiences while still acknowledging the complicated reality of the world we’re living in.

It’s Not Like That is a story about hope, and finding light after loss, rebuilding families and exhibiting grace in the most uncertain circumstances,” said Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson, series creators, executive producers and writers in a statement. “There is a powerful dynamic around what we all choose to hold onto when everything around us is falling apart, and how we find our way back – something we hope audiences will relate to and love.”

After watching the series’ trailer, its evident that It’s Not Like That explores grief in a grounded way — the kind that doesn’t wrap itself neatly or move in straight lines. Its characters stumble through awkward attempts at moving forward, wrestle with the idea of second chances, and discover that healing does not mean forgetting. In moments that range from intimate conversations to quietly devastating realizations, It’s Not Like That shows how relationships shift when life does, and how love can look different after loss while still being just as powerful.

It’s Not Like That premieres with two episodes on January 25, with the remaining episodes releasing weekly. The first episode will be sampled to all Prime Video subscribers that same day, allowing viewers everywhere a chance to step into Malcolm and Lori’s world before the series rolls out fully on Wonder Project’s subscription channel, with a global release to follow on Prime Video.
