“I would have bet a Taco Bell taco that we would not be where we are right now,” Sierra Deaton said when asked about her and her boyfriend Alex Kinsey‘s success this year.

After wowing all of America on The X Factor U.S.A.’s third and final season and reaching #1 on iTunes with their covers of A Great Big World’s “Say Something,” and Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity,” pop duo Alex & Sierra have officially released their debut album It’s About Us last Tuesday, October 7th, on Columbia Records.

Alex Kinsey and Sierra Deaton met while still in high school.  The duo formed a close relationship, with Sierra following musician/singer Alex on his run of shows across Florida.  Soon Alex began encouraging Sierra to join him on stage.  The collaboration began to blossom creatively, gradually transitioning into Alex & Sierra.  The effusive duo captured their initial X Factor audition in front of a rubber ducky shower curtain in Alex’s college dorm.   The performance would eventually snag them a spot on The X Factor in May of 2013.  Mentored by Simon Cowell, Alex & Sierra grew into one of the franchise’s most popular acts, winning America’s vote week after week on Season 3 and becoming the first group to win top honors on the U.S. edition of the music competition show.

After winning The X Factor, Alex & Sierra headed up to Malibu, California to begin working on their debut album. The hardworking duo collaborated with multiple noted producers and songwriters on the record, including Toby Gad (Beyoncé), John Legend, Jason MrazSam Hollander (Neon Trees, Gym Class Heroes), and Julian Bunetta (One Direction), among others.

“Writing with Jason Mraz was awesome. He’s a really good guy, which made the whole process so much fun. He’s a great artist and he’s really talented — it was perfect.” Alex said. “The title track on our album, which is “It’s About Us,” was pitched by Jason. It’s pretty cool to open up the little booklet and read ‘written by Jason Mraz’.” he added.

Alex & Sierra are really proud of It’s About Us and hope their fans will be too. “We hope our fans find one song they enjoy, whether it’s something they can blast when they’re really happy about something or driving in the car, or a song that they use to kind of get over something when they’re sad. We just want them to feel something no matter what it is.” Sierra said.
