Taking the number one slot on our “Best Moments” List is Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon and her heartwarming tribute to Ellen DeGeneres at the 2020 Golden Globes. At last year’s ceremony, Ellen received the Carol Burnett Award for Excellence in Television and McKinnon took advantage of the special moment to thank Ellen for her bravery and her trailblazing influence on the world.
The sketch comedy actress noted that Ellen’s decision to come out as gay and to share her story in the public eye has impacted her childhood for the best. “If I hadn’t seen her on TV, I would have thought ‘ I could never be on TV. They don’t let LGBTQ people on TV.’ And more than that, I would have gone on thinking that I was an alien that I maybe didn’t have a right to be here,” McKinnon shared during her Golden Globe speech.
After the moving tribute, the audience was holding back tears, yet laughing at the same time – turning the sentimental speech into a groundbreaking moment in TV history.
