Bad Bunny Faces A $40 Million Lawsuit From His Ex-Girlfriend

Puerto Rican rapper, Bad Bunny’s ex-girlfriend is suing him for at least $40 million, claiming that he utilized a recording of her voice without her consent or compensation.

Prior to her breakup with Bad Bunny, whose real name Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, and before his ascent to prominence internationally –  Carliz De La Cruz Hernández asserts that she recorded the phrase “Bad Bunny baby” on her phone in 2015.

She contends that the Grammy-winning artist’s 2017 hit “Pa Ti” and the 2022 song “Dos Mil 16” both feature the voice recording.

The songs are now both featured on the number-one album “Un Verano Sin Ti,” and both songs have received more than 200 million Spotify plays each.

De La Cruz insists that she coined the slogan and that it is being used without her consent in court documents submitted in Puerto Rico earlier this month. The usage of Bad Bunny, according to her attorneys, is unlawful under Puerto Rico’s “law of the right to own image.”

“Thousands of people have commented directly on Carliz’s social media networks, as well as every time she goes to a public place, about ‘Bad Bunny baby,’” the lawsuit states. “This has caused, and currently causes, De La Cruz to feel worried, anguished, intimidated, overwhelmed and anxious.”

According to the lawsuit, De la Cruz and Bad Bunny dated on and off since 2011. She professes that Bad Bunny gave her a $2,000 offer to purchase the recording in 2022, but she turned it down yet he exploited the recording without her explicit consent anyways.

De la Cruz is now seeking at least $40 million. Bad Bunny has yet to publicly addressed the lawsuit.

Another day, another messy high-profile breakup! We are wishing the best for Benito as he navigates a large sum lawsuit right before headlining at Coachella in less than a month away!
