Here is a collab that we never thought we would see. Bill Nye the Science Guy and Justin Bieber teamed up with Facebook Watch and EarthDay.org to drive awareness to Earth Day and the importance of saving our planet.
The parody video starts with an announcement that the next big Broadway musical is going to be all about Earth Day with Bieber starring onstage as Nye. Seemingly confused, Nye tries to explain how this is all a big misunderstanding, but the stars lined up to assist with the musical cannot stop speaking about their excitement.
And everybody is brought in! From Broadway stars Jasmine Cephas Jones, Idina Menzel and Ben Platt to TikTok stars Charli and Dixie D’Amelio to international pop stars Maluma and CNCO. Even Grammy-nominee Steve Aoki says that he will write the music for the show.
“I mean, sure, a musical about global warming sounds silly,” Cephas Jones, known for her dual roles as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in Hamilton. “But so did Hamilton at first.”
While all of this is fun, Nye gets down to business speaking about how we can all pitch in to make a change.
“Right now, there are a billion people across 192 countries taking climate action for Earth Day,” Nye states. “Not to mention all the young people who’ve made it their life’s mission to restore our Earth.”
He then introduces three young changemakers: Xiye Bastida, Jerome Foster II and Alexia Akbay. These three have incredible stories about their commitment to social change.
Bastida started out by joining her high school’s environmental club and organized a climate change walkout with 600 of her classmates.
“On the streets, I met organizers from all of the different schools in New York City, and we decided to come together to form Fridays For Future NYC,” Bastida recounts.
The movement is part of the larger Fridays For Future organization that takes place with over 14 million people in 7,500 cities across the globe.
Foster is the founder and executive director of OneMillionOfUs, an international youth-led, youth voting and advocacy organization, and serves on the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council.
“How can you actually make an impact?” Foster asks. “First is that you can call your member of congress. The next step is helping volunteer with movements. [Third,] social media can actually do things.”
Akbay cofounded and is the CEO of Symbrosia, which is developing a livestock feed additive out of seweed to help reduce methane emissions.
“Livestock is responsible for between 6 and 10 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions,” Akbay says. “So, if we can substantially reduce this source of emissions, it would go a long way.”
Unfortunately, it seems like this musical will not come to be, but it is awesome seeing so many stars come together for Earth Day and helping raise voices of the youth looking to make a difference.
