Billy Crystal To Receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards

Billy Crystal is can add the “Lifetime Achievement Award” to his list of accolades, as the legendary actor will be honored with the title at the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards next month.

Crystal is only one of six other actors to be honored with this title throughout the Critics Choice Awards’ 27th-year history. He joins the likes of Lauren BacallKevin CostnerClint Eastwood, Eddie Murphy, and Robert Wise, with Halle Berry receiving the sixth annual SeeHer Award during the 2022 ceremony.

“I am honored to receive this award and join such a select group,” Crystal tweeted after the announcement was made. “Thank you @CriticsChoice!”

Crystal is a comedian, actor, producer, writer, and director. His work has become known throughout the world through audiences that have enjoyed his films such as When Harry Met Sally…, and Analyze This but the list of films is somewhat infinite. He brings Mike Wazowski’s voice to life on Monsters, Inc. films, he has made special appearances on the sitcom Friends as Tim on ‘The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion,’ was the nine-time host of the Oscar Awards, hosted the GRAMMY Awards three times, and was a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. 

He received 14 Emmy nominations and won five. Crystal won his sixth Emmy for his 1989 HBO comedy special, Billy Crystal: Midnight Train to Moscow which led him to become the first to perform in the Soviet Union. He also hosted HBO’s Comic Relief and other comedic telethon specials such as On Location, A Comic’s Line, and Don’t Get Me Started with Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams. The telethons raised 75 million dollars which provided medical aid for the homeless in America.

As a writer, Crystal has written five books and received the 2007 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. His work includes Absolutely Mahvelous (1986), 700 Sundays (2005), and Still Foolin’ ‘Em (2014) along with two children’s books, I Already Know I Love You (2004) which was the New York Times bestseller, and Grandpa’s Little One (2006).

This year, Crystal will release his very first musical comedy, Mr. Saturday Night which focuses on a comedian searching for the spotlight 40 years after his TV career flopped. He wrote the musical alongside Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel and is set to arrive on Broadway on April 27. He will return to Broadway after making his debut in 2004 with his Tony Award-winning original production and one-man show, 700 Sundays which was taped in front of a live audience for an HBO special. It was later aired in April of 2014 and released on DVD. This Broadway production led him to earn four Emmy nominations.
