Cheryl Burke Opens Up About Navigating Divorce, Her Mental Health and New Podcast (Exclusive)

“2022 is the year for what, for Cheryl Burke?” Celeb Secrets reporter Blakely McHugh asked the Dancing With The Stars pro.

“For trusting myself, for vulnerability, and for new beginnings,” she responded.

In February 2022, the 38-year-old revealed she filed for divorce from Matthew Lawrence after three years of marriage.

The two got married in 2019, and prior to that, dated for roughly a year in 2007.

Now that she’s newly single, she’s taking the time to get back in touch with herself. Part of that process is through her podcast with iHeartRadio, Burke in the Game

“I am an open book to a fault,” she said about her new business venture. “I dont think there’s a lot of other podcasts out there for women that talk about freezing your eggs, sex, divorce and dating.”

Burke is bringing on life coaches, sex therapists, fertility nurses and even some of her famous friends like Jana Kramer – who has experience with divorce and public cheating scandals – Tamra Judge and Teddi Mellencamp.

Just a few years shy of 40, Burke says she’s no longer a “spring chicken.” She’s navigating uncharted territory, and hoping to connect with other women about similar experiences.

“It’s just nice to hear back from the listeners,” Burke said. “Every podcast, every show we do, we ask a question at the end and I take the time to read every single comment and it really helps me.”

When she said she was going to be vulnerable this year… she meant it.

Burke in the Game recently made headlines after she shared her ‘biggest confession to date,’ revealing she’s never had an orgasm from sex.

“This doesn’t reflect on any partner I’ve been with. It only reflects on me,” she said on her June 14th episode.

She went on to say, “I think the reason I didn’t want to say it was because I didn’t want to hurt anyone. But that has nothing to do with the person, it has everything to do with me and my shame and my child abuse and my vulnerability.”

Burke previously revealed in 2015 during TLC’s documentary, Breaking The Silence, that she suffered from molestation at the hands of a neighbor when she was a young child.

She’s been open about mental health struggles from that experience, including other mental illnesses like body dysmorphia. In order to get her mind back to a good place, one thing she does is delete social media.

“It’s like, I enjoy the people around me and I would like to have conversations and not be so distraught by one bad comment,” she said. “It actually affects my mental health.”

Especially during Dancing With The Stars. Burke says there will be one million good comments, but the one bad one will ruin her mood. She says “life is too short” to be worrying about the negative, so she simply deletes the app– out of sight, out of mind.
