After Baker Mayfield expressed his frustration with the Cleveland Browns organization and their desire to trade him, the star quarterback filed an official trade request on Thursday (March 17.
And today, it appears his trade is now one step closer to becoming a reality.
On Friday, March 18, the Browns finalized a trade with the Houston Texans for quarterback Deshaun Watson. In return, the Browns give up a slew of draft picks, including three first-round picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and other-round draft picks in future years.
Notably, though, one party is absent from the trade: Baker Mayfield. Mayfield still remains with the Browns, despite them now having Watson (who they’ll pay a guaranteed $230 million over five years). This is a clear indication that the Browns do not want Mayfield, the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

As of this point, multiple teams are now interested in Mayfield, including the Indianapolis Colts, which there have been rumors that Mayfield was interested in. Both quarterbacks had their struggles last year, as Mayfield struggled on the field with an injury, and Watson didn’t even play at all due to numerous sexual assault allegations against him.
Despite this, the charges against Watson were dropped this week by a jury in Harris County, Texas. Of this, Watson said, ”I’m just going to keep fighting to rebuild my name and rebuild my appearance in the community.” He can, however, still face punishment from the NFL, including further suspensions.
And now, it is only a matter of time before Mayfield hits the chopping block.
