Rising pop artist EMME is no stranger to wearing her heart on her sleeve, and with her newest single “Are You Winning Now?,” she’s diving deeper than ever before. The emotional track dropped this month, marking a major moment in what’s shaping up to be her most personal musical era yet — and Celeb Secrets got the full scoop straight from the artist herself.
“This is my favorite song I’ve ever written and I’m so excited to finally share it with the world,” EMME tells us. “This single, alongside the previous two songs I’ve recently released, are all part of a friend breakup album I’ll be fully dropping later this fall.”
EMME is shining a much-needed spotlight on a topic that’s often overlooked: the heartbreak of losing a close friend.
“A year and a half ago, I went through a rough friend breakup, and I felt like I hadn’t heard enough songs about the topic,” she explains. “So I decided I wanted to write an entire album about it.”
The result? A body of work that captures the raw emotions of grief, confusion, and healing—all through EMME’s signature lyricism and vulnerability. And “Are You Winning Now?” is at the emotional core.
“This song is by far the most vulnerable song on the album, and it honestly felt like it poured out of me,” she shares. “I never got to have any sort of closure with this person, so the lyrics feel like everything I wish I could say to them. Hearing the song back for the first time felt so therapeutic, and I hope anyone going through something similar can relate to it.”
EMME says she especially resonates with the chorus, both lyrically and musically. “My favorite part is definitely the chorus, specifically for the lyrics, but I especially love the second chorus harmonies that bleed into the post-chorus.”
When it comes to navigating the pain of a friend breakup, EMME has learned a lot and she’s ready to pass that wisdom on.
“My biggest piece of advice is to remember that they are no longer in your life for a reason,” she says. “It’s OK to outgrow friendships. Just because someone has been around a long time doesn’t mean you have to put up with poor behavior.”
With “Are You Winning Now?” setting the tone, fans can expect more heartfelt tracks leading up to the full album later this year. “Over the next several months I’ll be dropping more singles,” EMME teases. “Stay tuned!”
