Erin Kirby is Not About to Be a Guy’s “Practice Girlfriend” in New Single (Listen)

Erin Kirby isn’t looking to be any guy’s practice girlfriend, and its a whole MOOD for 2020.

The budding singer/songwriter released the anthem-style bop — appropriately titled “Practice Girlfriend” — back in September and we can’t get enough of it.

According to Kirby, the song is about a boy she was talking to that used to tell her that it was okay that he was seeing someone else at the same time because she was just his “practice girlfriend.”

“The lyrics tell the story of a real life dating experience of mine, and stresses not settling for anyone that does not treat you how you deserve,” Erin says.

Celeb Secrets sits down (virtually) with the pop singer to learn more about the song and its creative process, what advice she has for girls in similar situations, and how her journey on American Idol shaped her into the artist she is today.

Make sure to read our full Q&A with Erin and listen to “Practice Girlfriend” below and don’t forget to let us know what you think of the song by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets.

Celeb Secrets: Congrats on the release of your new single “Practice Girlfriend.” For those who haven’t heard it yet, how would you describe its sound?

Erin Kirby: “Thank you so so much! I believe that the best way to describe it is….it is an anthem style bop. It is definitely a true pop song.”

CS: We know the song is based on a real-life experience you had with a previous guy. Can you tell us a little more about the backstory behind the song?

EK: “Yes! A guy I know always told me that one day he would date me but first he needs to get his life together.I understood that except he would then have girlfriends and try to flirt with me on the side. I eventually called him out on it and he told me not to worry because those are just his ‘Practice Girlfriends’ until the day comes that he dates me. I thought that was extremely unfair, disrespectful, and stupid….so I wrote a song about it.”

CS: We know not all girls can see their love interest’s true colors when they first meet, but what advice would you give girls that may be going through a similar situation?

EK: “I would definitely ask God to lead you in the right direction. Be patient for love and wait for someone you do not feel worried about.”

CS: Was “Practice Girlfriend” written pre-or during the pandemic? Can you talk to us a little more about the studio day/creative process?

EK: “It was written just a few days before quarantine started! I went to LA and met with a fellow group called Sleeping Lion for a writing session. We started by writing this song on the piano and went from there!”

CS: Since we’re Celeb Secrets, can you share a behind-the-scenes secret from recording “Practice Girlfriend” that we wouldn’t know when listening to it?

EK: “One thing that happened while recording the song is we recorded each take ending is even numbers because odd numbers are not my personal favorite! LOL!”

CS: Who or what would you say has been influencing your music lately?

EK: “I really enjoy listening to other artists to set myself up for the writing mood. Some of my favs are JP Saxe and Sody!”

CS: We know that you were also previously a contestant on ‘American Idol.’ Can you touch briefly on your experience and how it has shaped you as the artist you are today?

EK: “‘American Idol’ was so fun! I had the greatest time and met some amazing people. The show really helped me find my true genre. Before AI I didn’t know if I was pop soul or what, but after the show I new that I was just pop!”

CS: Is “Practice Girlfriend” a taste of what’s to come from your new music (if any is on the way)?

EK: “Most definitely! I have some very similar, fun songs coming very soon!!!”
