First Stream: Rob Mayes New EP “Songs From The Sofa: A Quarantine Project”

Rob Mayes is back with the fourth (and final) installment of his latest project Songs From The Sofa: A Quarantine Project, and CS Country has your first listen to the entire EP before its release on Friday (October 9).

Back in April during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic, Mayes wrote and recorded a series of songs in his living room while in lockdown. Featuring a stripped-down sound, Songs From The Sofa: A Quarantine Project – Part 4 sheds light on the uncertainty and doubt and solemnness associated with the times, while still imbuing the current climate with solace and hope.

“I felt obliged to create and to reflect on what I’ve been feeling/what I’m certain we’ve all been feeling: uncertainty and doubt, but still trying to have hope.  The rawness associated with the project would usually bother me, but not in this circumstance. I believe it reflects the imperfection of our time, the solitude, and the solemnness,” Mayes tells CS Country. “I didn’t want to wait a year to put these songs out. So, I decided to interject my pre-existing releases with these stripped-down songs that came straight from my couch, and straight from the heart.”

Featuring four new original songs, Mayes recorded this project right in his living room on his sofa. “These vocals weren’t recorded like what you hear on a standard, big production song,” he shares. “I sang through them a couple of times, and that’s what you hear. I think in terms of congruence, there’s something to that. To chop up and comp vocals can sound great in pop music and pop-country, but you run the risk of bastardizing the THREAD, or the fiber of the connectedness to what you’re saying and singing. I didn’t want to mess with that. If I felt a pass in my gut, that’s what made it into the recording; it’s not perfect, but it’s more honest.”

Mayes hopes that the fourth installment brings patience, reflection, and truth to whomever is listening. “It’s ok to doubt, ponder, ask for help, and reach out,” he says, “but it’s equally important not to go down the rabbit hole.”
