Gruntry Songstress Sophia Scott Talks New Song “Sweetheart” (Exclusive)

Sophia Scott just dropped a new single “Sweetheart,” and it’s bound to make your day even sweeter. “Sweetheart” is the perfect ode to all the high school sweethearts and whether you are currently in that love boat or just reminiscing, the song is a heavenly listen.

According to a press release, “Sweetheart” continues to push forward the “powerful vocal prowess” and “unapologetic, honest lyricism” that Scott is known for.

Using a celebratory spirit to drive that honest lyricism, Scott shared in an exclusive interview with Celeb Secrets Countrythat the song celebrates the idea of a first love.

“Well, so basically I have a lot of like breakup songs and I wanted this one to be kind of like a celebration of your high school sweetheart and just instead of looking at your past relationships in a negative way to sort of celebrate them and like wish the person well,” Scott said. “I wanted to put a song out for Valentine’s day that felt more celebratory of the high school sweetheart kind of situation, first love situation and yeah, instead of the alternative, which I’ve done a lot in the past.”

And while she may be switching up her approach to writing about romance, her unique style, classified as “gruntry,” stays strong.

“So I call it like ‘gruntry’ or ‘southern pop’ sometimes too, just because I also do have a lot of soulful influences,” Scott explained. “Like I grew up listening to a lot of R&B and like powerhouse, soul singers, like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, and then I listened TLC, but then I also listened to like Nirvana and Pink and, you know, The Beatles and James Taylor and Joni Mitchell.”

Blending aspects from some of the greatest names in music, Scott has truly channeled a striking talent. She also teased that this blend of influences will be ever-present in the music to come.

“…You’ll hear it more in the other ones that come out too, but I think it’s just like a mixture of like very country songwriting and soul-rock, I guess, as far as like production goes and also sort of pop too,” Scott said. “But I think the thing that I’ve always been super influenced by is just really great songwriting and there’s obviously been so many people that have helped to shape that, but yeah, I try to stay true to like the country lyric of it all and then let the music kind of speak for itself and be its own sort of lane.”

Celeb Secrets Country sat down with Sophia Scott (virtually) to learn more about the inner workings of her music and what has shaped her as an artist.
