Hulu’s “Prom Dates” is a Night Filled with Laughs, Love, and Life Lessons (Review)

As Hulu unveils its latest teen comedy, Prom Dates, viewers are invited to a night filled with laughter, heartfelt moments, and a fresh take on the highs and lows of high school.

Directed by Kim O. Nguyen, the film stars a dynamic ensemble including Julia Lester (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”), Antonia Gentry (“Ginny & Georgia”), and a host of other young talents who bring to life the story of two best friends, Jess and Hannah, and their whirlwind prom night.

Prom Dates follows best friends Jess and Hannah, who, at the tender age of 13, made a pact to have the perfect senior prom. Despite the looming changes that college will bring, they are committed to making this night unforgettable. However, with only 24 hours to go, their plans unravel as they both end up dateless. The duo embarks on a frantic search to find new dates and fulfill their middle-school dreams, but as the night unfolds, they discover deeper truths about themselves and what they value most in relationships.

“Hannah is so funny, discovering herself throughout the movie. She has this wonderful soulmate friendship with Jess, which really drew me to the character. The script was hilarious, and the characters were written so authentically,” Lester, who plays Hannah, shares with Celeb Secrets when speaking about her connection to her role.

Terry Hu portrays Angie, a pivotal character in Hannah’s journey. “Angie plays a significant role in helping Hannah on her journey. She’s chill yet independent and principled, especially seen when she declines Hannah’s girlfriend proposal but agrees to remain friends. I loved how self-aware and grounded Angie is,” they explain.

The film goes beyond typical teen comedy tropes to explore the evolution of relationships and personal growth. Discussing his character Luca, Jordan Buhat highlights the complexity of portraying someone who is rather unlikable and flawed: “Luca is different from me, particularly in how he interacts with others,” he tells Celeb Secrets. “What’s interesting is that he shows moments of kindness before dropping some of the worst lines. It’s that mix that makes him a realistic character, not just a typical bad guy.”

Kenny Ridwan, who plays Greg, identifies with his character’s romantic inclinations: “Greg is a sweetheart, a hopeless romantic like myself. The film explores the incompatibilities in relationships, which I found relatable. Greg’s evolution in understanding love reflects a deep, resonant message that love involves accepting many versions of the same person.”

The cast agrees that Prom Dates is more than just a teen comedy; it’s a film about love in its different forms. “Luca doesn’t change much, which is crucial as it pushes Jess to evolve and reassess her values,” Jordan says, with Kenny adding, “The movie shows that love can take many forms, whether it’s between friends, romantic partners, or even those transitioning out of a relationship.”

“Prom Dates” offers a perfect blend of comedy and introspection, ideal for a Friday night hangout with friends. “I want it to make their Friday night,” says Terry. “Get some popcorn, watch it, laugh, and then hang out with friends. It’s such a feel-good movie.” This teen comedy is designed to be the ultimate feel-good movie for a night in with friends.
