Hulu’s WOKE Shines a Light Onto the Social Issues of 2022 in New Season

Just when you thought there couldn’t be enough racial challenges upon us, the world continues to throw more of them out there. Hulu‘s Woke is back for a second season today (April 8), and it touches on the shifting narrative of race as it relates to Lamorne Morris’ Keef Knight.

Last season, the show captured the (slightly) true story of cartoonist Keith Knight who becomes “woke” after a personal and racially-charged police brutality experience. This season, the show explores racial topics as a trend, something that viewers may find common to see in their everyday lives.

Celeb Secrets correspondent Sydney Veda spoke with cast members Blake Anderson (Gunther) and T. Murph (Clovis) to learn how the show continues to be a success and what to expect this season.

T. Murph says he hopes that people can see themselves in the characters and form a sense of empathy for their loved ones that they may not fully understand.

“Find out what it could be that’s causing [your loved ones] to act the way that you think is negative,” Murph tells Celeb Secrets exclusively, “Because sometimes we feel like people like to be a-holes, when honestly they could be hurt.”

Anderson says viewers can expect to be a part of the exploration of the show’s characters as they reflect more fleshed-out storylines and engage in more interactions with each other.

“I was super excited to be able to work with Sasheer [Zamata] this season, I got to do a lot of scenes with her so that felt really cool and fresh to me.”

He also says that if there is one thing to gain from the entire season, and the series as a whole, it’s that race is a complicated topic. As everyone tries to get a better understanding of the world around them, give yourself time and grace during the process.

“It’s okay just to evolve along with it,” Says Blake, “You know it’s a learning process. Nobody has the answers right out the gate so just keep staying plugged in and in tune and evolving as a person and hopefully we get to tell more seasons and you get to see that as well.”
