James Barker Band is giving us music that’s truly ahead of our time!
The Canadian country group released their highly-anticipated label debut EP Ahead Of Our Time today (October 20), giving their US fans songs that showcase the band’s signature wit and infectious melodies.
“We are so excited for the EP to finally be out. We’ve got an awesome team at Records Nashville, and an awesome freaking batch of songs that we are very excited to put out into the world for folks to hear,” frontman James Barker tells Celeb Secrets exclusively in a virtual interview.
With five of the six songs penned by frontman James Barker, and credits from some of Nashville’s most established writers including Rodney Clawson, Hunter Phelps, and Travis Wood, Barker tells Celeb Secrets that naming the project after their song “Ahead Of Our Time” just “felt so right.”
“The EP is named after the song ‘Ahead Of Our Time,’ and it’s a little bit different than anything we’ve released in the past. It’s more emotional, a little bit more of a ballad, but it’s the one where as soon as we show people [the song], they say its something special. So we were like, ‘you know what? It feels like it’s all almost too perfect to call the EP that it just felt so right,'” James explains.
“At times we felt a little bit like we’re ahead of our time with this batch of songs because we’ve been sitting on it for so long. It feels cool because I don’t know if any other songs spelled ahead of our time and it’s such a common phrase and such a, a big thought.”
Reassuring that there’s truly something for everyone on Ahead Of Our Time — as its filled with sad, nostalgic, cheeky and even edgy songs — the EP sets the precedent for the band’s next chapter, which is inspired by growth both professionally and personally.
“This next chapter is definitely like — I don’t know, to quote Taylor Swift — the fearless chapter where we’re trying to take on the world,” Barker says with a smile. “We’ve been super fortunate to have some success in Canada, but our goal has always been to blow up all over the world, blow up in America. And this next season is all about that. I feel like this music, speaking personally, is the best music we’ve ever released and gives us a really good chance of doing that because I really think people are gonna connect with it.”
