Liam Davis Wants the World to See His Vulnerable Side Through New Song “Make Me Cry” (Exclusive)

Liam Davis might make you cry when you find out who his latest single is about.

The native New Yorker’s newest track, “Make Me Cry,” was inspired by his toxic ex-girlfriend from college who betrayed him with another man.

“I was in a very toxic relationship when I wrote it. The guy that she told me to never worry about
ended up being a problem,” he told Celeb Secrets in an exclusive interview.

“Make Me Cry” is the follow-up to Davis’ debut “In My Dreams,” which is a contemporary ballad that relives a past relationship that later took a downfall due to personal issues. Influenced by various music genres, Davis began playing piano at the mere age of eight, followed by guitar at fifteen, which encouraged him to produce his own original music.

As for what’s next, Liam has been hard at work putting his thoughts to paper and recording new music. “I’ve got a couple more singles on deck but an album is always in the back of my mind,” he shares.

Celeb Secrets: Hello Liam, thanks for talking with us! Congratulations on your new single “Make Me Cry,” how does it feel each time you finalize a song and get to share it with others.

Liam Davis: “Thanks for having me! It’s a weird combination between scary and empowering. Letting the world see your vulnerable side is a trip, especially leading up to the release. You never truly know how people are going to respond once the song is out there. That being said, when it really hits people and they feel connected to you, it’s the coolest thing. It’s good to know that a lot of other people can relate to what you’re feeling.”

CS: Your new single seems very sentimental at first and then becomes upbeat, what made you choose those tunes for the song?

LD: “I don’t really think about writing that way. I don’t consciously go ‘let’s start soft and end huge.’ I just let myself feel whatever I’m feeling at the time and go with it. The song is definitely a bit of a rollercoaster but that’s where my heart took me. I was feeling a deep hurt when I wrote it which is definitely represented more by the first half of the song. After that, it develops a sort of rebellious angst which says, I’m done feeling sorry for myself. Life goes on.’”

CS: Tell us a little more about “Make Me Cry,” what is the meaning behind it?

LD: “I was in a very toxic relationship when I wrote it. The guy that she told me to never worry about
ended up being a problem. The song is about being betrayed by someone but still loving them after the fact because you can’t help it. It can be really hard to just say ‘I’m done.’”

CS:  Is there someone in particular that encouraged the creation of this song?

LD: “Yes. My college girlfriend.”

CS: Talk to us about the music video! What inspired the concept, direction, etc?

LD: “The video for my first single ‘In My Dreams’ followed a storyline much more than this video. I wanted this one to be a little showier, taking place in the city versus the country. Most of the video consists of shots of me playing the song on guitar while flashbacks of my ex and ‘the other guy’ come and go. I’m lucky to have an incredible director named Taylor Jarvis who is great at bringing my ideas to life.”

CS: Do you have any favorite memories from filming the music video that you can share with
us?

LD: “It would probably be the day that we did the flashback shots. I’m good friends with the actors who played my ex-girlfriend and ‘the other guy.’ The three of us couldn’t help but crack jokes the whole time. It was definitely hard to keep a straight face at times when I was supposed to look upset but we got it done, haha.

CS:  What do you want your audience to feel as they listen to the song or watch the music
video?

LD: “Euphoria. I think that the way the song is arranged/produced, it can definitely take you on a journey. The video is really the cherry on top.”

CS: How do you think you can inspire new musicians to follow their dreams to create their own tunes?

LD: “Becoming a truly unique artist is not an overnight process. It takes life experience…pain, joy, love, and suffering. I think the best thing that musicians/artists have to offer is their story. It is the thing that distinguishes you from everyone else. In terms of creating the actual music, learn from the people that you look up to and build a vocabulary. When you do that for long enough, you start to become this combination of things that have inspired you your whole life. I hope that I can inspire musicians to be themselves. That is the greatest gift that we have as artists, to express ourselves and inspire others to do the same.”

CS: What are your plans for 2022? Can we expect more music from you?

LD: “Perform and record. I’ve got a couple more singles on deck but an album is always in the back of my mind.”

CS: Since we are Celeb Secrets, do you have any secrets to share that fans
wouldn’t know about both the song and yourself?

LD: “I wrote the song in one night… five years ago. We started producing it right when Covid hit and it took close to two years to get it done. It feels amazing to have it out after all that time.”
