Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. Exits Game With Injury

Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. left his team’s game on Wednesday (April 5) after hurting his shoulder on a steal attempt.

In Miami’s 5-2 win over the Twins, Chisholm led off the game with a single but was caught stealing second two pitches later, sliding head-first into Minnesota second baseman Kyle Farmer‘s leg and staying on the ground for a few minutes after the play. After being looked at by the medical staff, he exited the game and did not return.

Chisholm, 25, said he felt numbness in his upper body area immediately after the play and couldn’t lift his arm to get himself off the ground, but regained feeling a few minutes later when he went to the locker room. He said he wasn’t evaluated for a concussion since it was his neck and shoulder specifically that collided with Farmer.

Diagnosed with a stinger in his right shoulder, Chisholm told manager Skip Schumaker he still plans to play in the Marlins’ series opener on Friday against the Mets. He had injury issues last season, missing over 100 games with a stress fracture in his lower back and later undergoing surgery to repair his right meniscus.

In the only full season of his career in 2021, Chisholm slashed .248/.303/.425 with 18 home runs and 23 stolen bases, immediately establishing himself as one of the flashiest players in the league. He was still voted to the All-Star game despite his injury last year, hitting .254 with a 139 OPS+ (the league average is 100).

Bryan De La Cruz replaced the injured Chisholm, going 1-3 with the go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning and a run scored.
